Looking for New Pediatrician

I currently bring my one year old daughter to my general practice/family practice doctor. He does a great job (and has a good Christian focus, which is a bonus), but it is a long drive. I am wondering if anyone has recommendations on a good pediatrician closer to my area. I am near I435 and Holmes, so very close to St. Joseph Hospital, Children's Mercy, and not far from St. Luke's South or Menora. I would also consider driving up to St. Luke's on the Plaza. I would like someone who is thorough and who takes time to answer questions. Also, she isn't sick often, but I'd like to be able to get her in to be seen on short notice if it seems necessary.

What can I do next?

I am sure it is now difficult to decide with all of the many responses you have received! I would highly recommend Pediatric Professional Association, which is located in the Medical Bldng next to OPR. We see Mary Jo Flint and she is Awesome. She takes her time with us and is very thorough. She makes you feel like she has all the time in the world for you and will take time to answer all of your questions and never makes us feel rushed. Her nurse, Iris, is also great and very helpful when we call for questions. They have walk-in hours every morning of the week and also on Saturdays in the winter, which is helpful. They also have a Dr on call during the day to just take "sick" appointments. Hope this helps! Here is the website if you're interested:

Hi Jessi,

i see someone already recommended Dr. Dattel at Kansas City Pediatrics, and I second that. He is our pediatrian, and we have been very happy with them. If we call asking for an appoinment due to illness, they always get us in the same day. They are awesome! I will warn you that appointments usually run late, we have been in the waiting room up to 30 minutes past our appointment, but we understand that it is because they make sure all sick kids get in same day - and it is worth the wait! They are in teh St. Joe Medical Center, and here is their number: ###-###-####. The nurses are great, too, by the way.

Good luck!

Dr Yannette at Raintree Pediatrics is the best. I interviewed tons of other peds and was really nervous about who we were going to use until a nurse told me that I should talk to him. We do selective vaccinating and I prefer more holistic treatments to conventional. He is very supportive of both and doesn't make me feel like I'm a horrible parent for not wanting to give her every vaccine, etc. I did get this vibe from several of the other peds that I interviewed, including one that told me she didn't want my daughter as a patient if we weren't going to adhere to the Vit K, Hep B at birth and all the vaccines as recommended on schedule. Dr. Yannette actually has an autistic son, so he's done a lot of research in the area and he understands the concerns and hesitations of parents. My daughter is almost 17 months old and she has never walked out of his office sad or upset, even after getting a shot.

Hi, I responded to your OB request too. :) We briefly used Preferred Pediatrics at St. Luke's South. That was before my insurance changed. They were great. They were recommended by my OB down the hall...BONUS!

I would suggest Dr Datel at St Joe. He is really great and I loved him, but it was too far for us to drive to see him. I think the group that he is with called Kansas City Peds.

I would recommend Dr. Kay Hunsley. The name of the practice is Child Care Limited and she is at St. Joseph. I really like her a lot. Their practice does not have any nurse practioners on staff, so every time you go, you will be sure to see a doctor. I had to take my daughter when she was sick a couple of times, and they always see her asap.
Unfortunately, I no longer have the same insurance and can't go there anymore, and I am so upset that I have to change to someone new. The phone # is ###-###-####. You can make an appointment to just meet with her to see if you like her or not. She was always very nice and very thorough.
Hope that helps.

I used to go to Pediatric Associates at the Plaza, Dr. Chas Moylan, very patient and they have a clinic every morning that doesn't require an appt, walk in. I used it a good deal as I am a working mom. You can always get in, even if you don't go see your own doctor.

Good luck!

I use Dr. Grossman at Pediatric Care Specialists. Their office is just behind St. Luke's South. I was originally turned off by the office b/c it's huge! There is always a bunch of people in the waiting room, etc., but once we got to know Dr. Grossman, we absolutely love him! I always have a list of questions when I go in and he is always patient and thorough. He never seems rushed to go to the next patient and is very nice and knowledgable! Good luck!

Dr. Holleman on the Plaza is wonderful! ###-###-####.

I have raved about him on other posts but he always takes the time to truly talk to us. He is a great man and a great Dr. The think I like most about his is he respects my "mama intuition". If I think it's serious althought the systoms might not present it so, he will go the extra step to make sure he is not missing anything. He says the best people to help diagnosis is the parents. They know when something is not right.

College Park Family Care Center has several offices in the area so you can choose the one that is closest to you. They have several pediatricians, family practice doctors, and specialists. They have acute care hours available as well as same day appointments when needed for emergencies, and also have doctors on call. I have been to a few of their offices on same day visits as this is when we usually go to the doctor and have been pleased with all the doctors we have seen in acute care or same day appointments so far.

My kids see Joseph Kanarek, M.D., he is at St. Joseph's Hosptial Medical Center. There has never been a time that I haven't been able to get my kids in the same day if need be. He has been so wonderful and is always very helpful and never seems put out if I have paged him after hours.

Dr. Scott Dattel at St. Joe's is, hands down, THE BEST! He is talented and wise, has a great connection with kids, is always straightforward with the parents, does not overprescribe, and will give you his cell phone and mean it when he tells you to call if anything changes/ comes up. I have been thoroughly impressed with him since moving here to KC 2+ years ago. I knew probably 200 pediatritians in Dallas through my previous career, so I know what to look for! His office staff is great too, smart nurses will help you answer questions over the phone to save an office visit if possible, and they even have convenient weekend hours. (He has also solved several serious medical problems that other docs couldn't for children who were suffering without answers.) V.

If you're near Lee's Summit, Prefered Pediatrics is a great place to go. We can get our daughter in the same day if she's sick and they've always taken great care of her.

My kids go to Megan Loeb at Child Care Ltd. in Medical Building B at St. Joseph. She is usually pretty easy to get into and she is very thorough. She also is more than willing to take time to answer questions. If your child is ever sick, you can either make a sick appointment or they have walk-in hours pretty much all day. My kids have not been sick that often, but when we have used the walk-in clinic they usually have been seen by her. It is a large group and all the doctors are great so if you want a sick appointment, instead of walking in, you can always get into someone. On one occasion, my child was very sick and they really went the extra mile!
