Hi Mamas-
My husband and I are coming up on our 5th wedding anniversary (6/5/09) and would like to take a little weekend trip by ourselves, to celebrate. I don't want to go far, as I will have a 7 week old, 2.5 yr old and 4 dogs that I will be leaving behind in Crystal Lake, with my mother-in-law. Can you give me any ideas of where to go, where to stay and what to do? We are trying to keep this relatively inexpensive, as we will have just recently incurred the costs of an additional child. Also, have any of you gone to the Eagle Ridge Resort in Galena, IL? Thanks so much!

How about a bed and breakfast in Long Grove? Galena or Lake Geneva are safe bets. I dont know if it will be warm when you go but Lake Geneva has a lot to do outside. My personal opinion is I like Lake Geneva better than Galena. Just keep in mind, any place away from the kids (just the 2 of you) will be peaceful! Enjoy!

A Bed & Breakfast in Galena is a great idea---How about a night away at The Sybaris in a pool suite?

We did a mini weekend getaway to the Wisconsin Dells. Since it is the off season we got a great deal on a fantasy suite room with a hot tub! The place wasn't crowded and a lot of the attractions were discounted.

My husband and I attended a marriage retreat this past February at Eagle Ridge Resort. It was fine, though the king suite isn't anything special at all--a basic hotel room with a king bed. Maybe the upgraded room would be nice, though I would also recommend just a B&B--Galena is beautiful and quaint, especially if you kinda like the old historical stuff and walking. But it's not exactly cheap, as most spa-like get-away areas are. Lake Geneva might be better, or if you want a hike, look up in Door County, WI.

Oh, Please have mercy on the Mother-in-law! Look into pet care for your dogs. BC Dog Training also provides a healthy kennel and fair prices. Cathie Sabin, the owner, is very
reasonable and has 30 years experience with pets and owners. I would hesitate to leave my dogs in the care of anyone who is not qualified, even family. Camping can be a great getaway. Try Wild Bill's by the Wolf River, beautiful cabins and grounds.
