Looking for Help from Those Ugly Stains

I would like to know if anyone knows how to get the ugly rust stains out of the toilet. I have rust stains around the rim of several toilets and have tried every kind of cleaning agent on the shelves at several different stores. I cannot use the fresh flush kind as we have a cat that drinks out of the toilet. My husband is not consistent with putting the lid down. I would love to hear some suggestions and maybe will find one I have not tried. Thank you

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Hi everyone! I would like to thank all who responded with several ideas I have not heard of. After buying the Rust remover, I noticed it said not to use on white color toilets. Mine are colors so I did not use it. I used the pumice stone and with a little elbow grease the stains came off. Again thanks to everyone for the great responses.

When I used to clean houses for a living, we would clean rust stains with using a piece of window screen and a small amout of Comet. It doesn't take a lot of elbow grease and it doesn't damage the enamel.

Try using rust remover for clothing. You'll find it in with laundry product; it comes in a small, brown, plastic bottle.

Hey N.
I thought that was a stain of the actual commode, but found that it is thick like a coating and will chip off but you have to be careful not to 'scratch' but still, the scratches are better than the stain! We moved into a little farm house and I thought I was going to have to replace the toilet they were so bad! I'd never had them before.

I went to the dollar store and bought some strong stuff - probably along the lines of that CLR they advertise on TV, but it was amazing and took almost all of it opff in about 10 minutes. There are lots of WARNINGS on the bottle you need to read. The brand I used was called SNO BOL and it mentioned "stubborn rust stains" on the bottle. To get it all, you might have to turn the water off and empty the bowl, but it may come out without that.

Hope that works for you.
Blessings

Try pouring a cheap bottle of cola into the toilet at night before bed. Put the lid down, and in the a.m. flush. Voila...stains gone!

There is a product in a gold colored can called "Barkeepers Friend". I have had success with it removing rust on many different surfaces. Put some in a small bowl and add enough water to make it pasty. With gloves on, apply the paste to the rust stains and let it set for a while and then try scrubbing it. I also use cleaning products from Melaleuca and those work well although I have never tried them on heavy rust stains as of yet. Hope any of this helps!

Hi N.,

Have you tried Get Clean's Scour Off? That stuff is awesome...it's also safe so you don't have to worry about your cat. http://www.shaklee.net/thewrightplace/product/00430

Hope that helps,

PS. I also noted the hardest thing about being a mom is letting the kids spread their wings and leave home. My younger daughter just moved with her 8 yo daughter to SC this past week. My house is soooooo empty. A couple of the rooms still echo. I've even turned into a regular water faucet! How did you deal with that?

I work as a custodian in a church. The toilet stones you can normally purchase at Walmart works great. I purchase mine from a warehouse that sell commercially to businesses, and you can by only one if you want.

I know this sounds silly, but I've heard a can of Coca Cola will do the trick. Good luck and God bless. A.

Bam is pretty good. Make sure the water is out of the tiolet first. Close the door so your cat will not get in. Let it stand for at least 1 hour and see if that will help.
