Kids and Beauty Products

My five year old recently asked me if he could use my hair gel to spike his hair up, but I'm not sure at what age certain beauty products are safe for kids. The packaging doesn't give any specifications, just warns about ingestion. Any suggestions on when it's safe to let kids use adult shampoos, hair gels/sprays, nail polish, body wash, etc? Thanks.

What can I do next?

Thanks a ton for the responses! He's going to have a blast doing his hair from now on. :)

unless he wants to eat it, let him use it. I put hair and nail products on my older kids (ages 5, 3, and 2) all the time. I dont used them on my 16 month old since she doesnt understand not to eat it.

well i have a 8 year old girl and a 3 year boy. i started using adult shampoo and cond. before she was 2, and as soon as she could she started PLAYING make-up, and nail polish. well hope that is a little helpful.

Hi J.. I put spray gel and even men's spray perfume on my 3 year old son sometimes. I don't think there is any health risk involved with it. But if you are really concerned, there should be a phone number on the bottle...you could always call and ask. Good luck!!

Hello,
It's perfectly safe, my son is 6 and we have used gel, and moose on him for a long time for spicking. Have fun.

J., I don't see a problem with that, I let my five year old daughter use nail poliah at that age. Just wouldn't use a lot especially if its hot. I know it hurts when it is in their eyes. I also let her use hairspray at 4 for a wedding.Just a little advice. I hope it comes in handy.

I began using regular hair care products on my daughter's hair when she was about 5, because her hair seemed too dry with using the kids stuff. I was told by the salon that we should start using product specially formulated for her type of hair. My belief is that when you feel they are really responsible enough to use them properly (with supervision still, of course), then it should be fine. Good Luck...

they do make products for kids i have seen them at the place i got to get my sons hair cut. it is called Kids hair(the place i get his hair cut) and i would assume that they would have kids hair products probably in the kids isle at your store.

I personally would never use hair/bathroom products on a baby under one year unless it's baby products but after about one year's old I don't see a problem with it. When my daughter was a baby I painted her toenails, I've used my shampoo on her since she was about 2 becuase it worked better and my daughter is now 5 and has gotten into anything and everything I have in the bathroom and we've never had a problem. I am careful with my daughter because she has sensitive skin and exzema. If you think about it other cultures and races specifically African American's use specific hair products on their young children mostly because they have to. I know my daughter's had that colored hair spray on a few occasions at the state fair and on Halloween. I think cholorine in a swimming pool is more harmful than hairspray or gel. Our local ymca burns our skin and eat's our swimsuits and turns my neighbors hair green, I swear they have to much chlorine. Anyways go for it !

My son who is also 5 started using hair gel recently. he sees his father using it, and wants to look more like him. We let him put the gel in his hair, or we help him. I think it was a phase, because now, just a few months later, he no longer uses it. it hasn't hurt him and we have been using regular adult shampoo and conditioner with him since he turned five.
