Ideas for Mosquito Bites That Welt Up
hello ladies! my 1-yr old tends to welt up pretty badly from mosquito bites. I am wondering if anyone has some suggestions for how to prevent the bites in the first place (i've heard of the avon skin-so-soft but don't know any avon ladies to order it from), and also if you have any ideas on how to keep the welts from getting so large and to help them heal faster.
They don't seem to bother her at all, but they look aweful and once a mosquito finds her, they all eat on her and she gets them all over her body.

I am allergic to insect bites too. I carry a Benedryl Anti Itch Stick and it works very well. You can get it at Wal-Mart.

We are dealing with this right now! My oldest ds and I get really bad welts from them, his even blistered. There are a few things that seem to work for us. Zyrtec and benadryl help with the itching and keep from getting worse. I use Benadryl cream and that seems to help his. A baking soda paste applied to it helps a lot! It dries it and relieves itching. I heard on tv that the inside of a banana peel helps relieve itching but I haven't tried it yet. Keep an eye on them for infection.

My son got this when he was little. He was allergic to the bites. Also the Dr. said that the more sugar he ate the more attractive he was to the bugs. Good luck.

Avon can be purchased on line and there is a store in the Goodyear area. They have a sunblock that is also a bug repellent. Skin so Soft can be sprayed around you doors to keep the mosquitos from coming in,
Benedryl cream has worked well for me with my grandchildren for the bites.

Hello-
The mosquitoes are attracted to the CO2 she emits(hers is special)- and her white blood cells ARE "OVERREACTING" which makes the huge bumps. If she scratches they will get even worse looking (and the itch will be worse). I get the same thing as does my son.
It LOOKS much worse than it is but spray Benadryl or other anti-itch stuff works really well if you catch it quick and dont let her scratch. At 1 she's probably not coordinated yet to find the right spot but you'll have to watch out later on.
You can get one of those carbon emitting traps and turn it on about 10-15 min. before you go outside or use DEET free bug spray. Skin-so-soft only works on some biting bugs and only occasionally. Hardly works at all for me.
You can experiment making your own with natural oils (tea tree and peppermint works best I believe) but check with your pediatrician and the local heath food store about concentration and frequency. Get a spray bottle and add a few drops to water and make sure you spray her hair and clothes lightly too.
Good luck!

Hello H.,
There is a product I bought at WalMart that is used to cool burns, but it works on scrapes and insect bites too. It has aloe vera in it, and my kids always heal very quickly when I use it on anything. They also never scar when I use it, which is a bonus. I'm sorry that I can't remember the name of the product, but it is found with other burn creams and it is bright green! Good luck.

You can get Avon products online. If you don't have access or don't want to go that route, there's a great product called Swy Flotter, by Kiss My Face. (They also make a sunscreen with the repellent.) There's no Deet. It's all natural. You can find it at stores like Sprouts or Sunflower Market. I've used both for repellent and both are great.
To help after...I've used Benedryl gel. I have pretty bad reactions to mosquito bites too, and when they get quarter sized, sometimes I get a sealable bag with ice for a few hours and then put on the gel.
Hope this was helpful...

Burt's Bees makes a FANTASTIC mosquito repellant! All natural essential oils and vit e oil. It comes in a metal can so the light can't get to it and oxidize the oils. My DD is also very fair and seems they just love her thin skin. I've heard of the dryer sheets and Avon's SSS, but haven't tried either.
As for itch relief, topical Benedryl works well without having the systemic effects of taking an oral antihistamine.
We also use Campho-Phenique, which is stinky because of the camphor but works well. My fav is my Grandma's remedy which is to make a paste with water and plain old meat tenderizer. All but the Benedryl cream can sting a very little bit if the welt has been scratched to the point where the surface skin has been broken.
We have been treating our daughter homeopathically for 4 years now and the homeopathic remedy we use to stop the itch of bites is Urtica. Hylands does an ointment stick called "Bug Bite" ointment. Homeopathy is very very effecitve with children and so very safe. http://www.amazon.com/Bug-Bite-Ointment-Ounce-Hylands/dp/...

Hi,
I'll bet you're going to get swamped with Avon ladies. I'm one of them. Besides regular Skin So Soft, we have a specific product called Bug Guard that is to prevent mossquitos and other bugs from biting. It's on sale right now 2for $12. You can e-mail me directly or go to youravon.com/elaineburke and place your order there. If you order from the avon site they will deliver it directly to you. I should tell you that the Bug Guard does not have DEET in it so it is a safe product to use on your little one.
Thanks,
E.
