Hi Everyone,
I recently purchased a new set of kitchen knives and no longer need my old set. They have been cluttering up my kitchen for almost two months now because I'm unsure of how to properly dispose of them. I just can't throw them in the garbage! That seems like it could be very harmful however I don't know of any other ways. Any suggestions?
Thank you in advance, you all are always so helpful!

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your wonderful suggestions. I cleaned them up, sharpened them and donated them to a local church that runs a soup kitchen. They were very grateful, thanks for the idea!

Why not give them to Goodwill or maybe a soup kitchen. If you have a woman's shelter there, you might want to consider there too..Also I believe the Salvation Army Store takes donations..

Donate them to a Thrift Shop... they always sold well no matter how old and worn when I worked at the Thrift Shop in Kyle.

One suggestion is to tape rectangles of paper board (like a cereal box) to each side of the blades and to the hilt before placing into the trash can.

I haven't tried donating a set of knives. That might be a good option. Goodwill might melt down the stainless steel (or whatever) for creating metal bowls or something. Thoughtful.

If they are still usable. You can try a site..or group on yahoo. called "freecycle". There are groups all across the country and you just join the group in your neighborhood.

If they are still useable, donate them to Goodwill, a thrift store, etc. Texas Paralyzed Veterans and the ARC of Texas call me every month asking for a donation of household items and clothing. Thrift stores are busy places these days.

What about donating them? There are several organizations that would accept kitchen utensils and things of that nature or even victims of fire, etc. We have lots of displaced families in our area who need items like this.

Take them to the Goodwill store, they will take them. Or give them to a friend that might be having a garage sale.
Or if you just want to dispose of them, get you some Styrofoam & push the blade down into it & tape them up tight in a walmart bag or something & put them in the gsrbage on garbage pickup day. Or you can get some duct tape & tape them all together around the bladed real thick & tye them up in a bag & put them out to the garbage.
One other suggestion is give them to a less fortunate person if you know any.
I myself shop on craigslist & freecycle but the only thing about advertising to give them away is, you never know who or should I say, what type of person is coming to your door to pick them up. I advertised a refrigerator on craigslist & I honestly got leary of some of the people calling my house wanting it. Some of them were down right annoying & so much to the point I was afraid to allow them to know where I live! but the majority sounded like good decent people. Needless to say, I wont do that again!
You dropping them off at a shelter or goodwill or throwing them in the garbage would be the safest. Can't be too careful these days!

Either keep them for your baby boy's first apartment (that will happen sooner than you think/like) or donate them to a church.

If the knives are still in good shape (no broken handles, etc) you may find a local ministry or shelter for homeles who accept household item donations. Or you can try a website like "free cycle" to give them away to someone with no money to purchase new. Or have a garage sale.

There are many places that would welcome them as donations. Charitable thrift stores such as Goodwill,Salvation Army, St. Vincent De Paul. etc. would take them. Also, organizations that help homeless families or domestic violence victims get back on their feet welcome donations of basic things needed to set up housekeeping. Some churches have outreach to people in need and might take them off your hands. You could also free-cycle them. I am sure they would go quickly. It is great that you are concerned about safe disposal options.

You can donate them t an an Assistance Ministry or the Salvation Army. Put them in a label box so the volunteer who opens it won't get hurt.
Everyone gives tax receipts so you can deduct if you itemize. They will take: old clothes, shoes, toys, books, furniture, appliances, dishes - anything

Hi J.,

If you are wanting to give them away and not throw them out, list them on Craigslist. You can log on at www.craigslist.org and list them under the Free Section in your area. Someone will come get them, and probably pretty quickly once you list. Hope this helps, and if you haven't used Craigslist before, I'm happy to walk you through it. Have a wonderful day.

FREECYCLE! List them on freecycle for someone to pick up. Or Craigslist. Many things people list are free, or you could charge a small amount for them. Kitchen knives aren't cheap so there could be plenty of people out there needing them.

The idea of donating the knives is a excellent idea.
The suggestion i would make, if the knives are still in good condition and you have the space, save them. A few years down the road, you might get into camping, and you would already some of the equipment you would need.
As I replaced my first utensils, first pots and pans from college and my mom's kitchen, I put them in the top cabinets for way down the road for my children's first apartments. I did drag them out, on occasions, for my children to play with as babies and in their play kitchens or when my husband was doing some messing cooking and I did not want him to ruin my good stuff.
Oh, by the way, our favorite knives are the old faithful ones, even though we have a top of the line knife set that my culinary arts daughter gave us.
(We are knife poor, we have knives in the drawer, in the knife rack on the cabinet, and the good ones in the knife block, and they all get used at various times.

Put them in a shoe box and donate them to a soup kitchen, church (if they have a kitchen), or goodwill. At goodwill you can take a tax deduction. Any of these places can put these old knives to good use. Mark the box so they kow there are knives in it.

Could you donate them? People can sharpen there knives. If you just want to toss them out then I suggest putting the knives into a coffee can or cutting a larg enough hole into a plastic gallon jug and putting them in there. Take a piece of cardboard and lay the knif at the edge then fold over the size of the knife. Roll it once more to completly surround it. Then tape up the ends. They should be safe enough.
