My son is have surgery later this month for an umbilical hernia. I was wondering if anyone else had gone through this? And if there were any complications and also how long recovery took?
My cousins and I all had double hernia operations at 7 weeks old. As far as I know, there were no complications and recovery didn't take too long.
Sorry I can't be of more help! I do know though, that I have to be careful of how much lifting and the weight.
My daughter has one and she has had it since her bellie butten came off. The doc just would say it will be fine wait till she is three, so we are waiting, she is almost 2 and she still has it. Is that what your Doc said? So now why is he having surgry, Is it because he is older and it didn't close over time? I ony wonder because my daughter may have to have it to. Medicine is great and I'm sure he will be fine and recover fast. Take care
I was born with one and so was my kid's father. with me they did'nt do anything. the doctor told my mom to put a bandaid on it and it will go down(very old fashiond) with my kid's dad he had surgery and he was fine. every time I get pregnant my belly butten will stick out so far that it hurts to wear a shirt over it and sometime now you can just touch my belly butten and it hurts. especially if I'm full. I think he will be fine. the recovery should'nt take too long becuase I had a hernia when I was 5 or 6 in my abdomin and I only remember not being able to walk for a couple days.
My son just had to have surgery to bring down both of his testicles and plus he had hernia on both sides. He was fine during surgery since they put him out. He was tired and very cranky afterwards. Just wanted to be held. He cant take a bath in the bathtub for 14 days and cant straddle any toys for awhile too. Does this help you? Let me know!
My experience with this is a little different, but it still involves hernia surgery -- Well, my son was born with only one testicle, so when he was 7 months old he had surgery to remove what was left of his damaged testicle. At the same time the doctor noticed he had a hernia on the other side. So, he had surgery on both sides, and he did just fine. I held him in the recovery room of the hospital until he woke up, and then we got to take him home. He was a little out of it (cranky and sore), for a couple of hours, but then he was fine! He was crawling around again by later that night! Kids bounce back so fast - it's amazing! Good luck with your son's surgery. I was very emotional about it, as I'm sure you will be too.

I am a surgical pediatric nurse and I have taken care of many children after their hernia surgeries. I can tell you from my experience as a nurse, that children typically do very well after this surgery. The trick is getting them to take their pain medicine. Since your son is 4, hopefully it won't be to much of a battle. He is old enough to understand that the medicine will help him feel better. Where is he having his surgery? Will they do it laproscopically? If it is done laproscopically, kids recover very quickly--usually even outpatient and go home the same day, sometimes stay one night. It will take a couple days before he's feeling "good", but will have to take it easy for a couple weeks, so he doesn't get another hernia. Also, if its done laproscopically, then he will probably have a lot of gas pain because they use air to fill his abdominal cavity during the surgery. The only thing that helps this pain, is walking around to disperse the air back into the tissues and blood stream.

My son had this when he was 5 months old. The surgery just was a couple hours and then we took him home. he did really well. they gave me some medication for pain and said I could give him benadryl to help him rest and within 2 days he was bouncy and happy again. Good luck.

My brother went though that surgery. He came though with no problems at all. Complications are minimal. Today’s technology is fantastic. Recovery will depend on the overall health of your son and how well the surgeon is. I know the biggest thing is to make sure that he doest not get upset a cry or play too hard. It can pull apart what they just put together.
