Our five month old was diagnosed with a heart mumur today and we are seeing a pediatric cardiologist next week. Does anyone have any experience with their children and a heart murmur? If so, I would appreciate hearing about your experience. Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone who sent advice. Each of you offered great support for us! We found out our daughter has two tiny holes in her heart. However, they are considered trivial and may close on their own. If they remain open, it is not a big deal as she will just take antibiotics before certain medical procedures.

My son also has an innocent heart murmur. We found it at his 6 month well baby. He was about to have surgery so they sent us to a cardiac specialist also. They did all sorts of tests...stuck probes on his chest, did an ultrasound of his heart, listened to him. And it all came back perfectly normal and innocent. He said almost all heart murmurs are innocent ones. The tests are all so quick. The one with the probes on his chest (they stick on with little stickers like band aids) took longer to put on him than the test itself took. I know how nerve racking and scary this is for you...I remember. Take comfort in the fact that it will most likely be a very minor issue in your life! He turned 2 the beginning of January and as of the middle of this month he still has the murmur. Take care!

At fourteen months, our daughter had a heart murmur. The doctor said it was really common in toddlers and infants. But she was undereating at the time, so he did a chest Xray and there was nothing wrong with her heart, thankfully. I'm not sure why your doctor is sending you to a specialist, but just know that a murmur is very common and in all likliehood your baby is just fine. Good luck!

My little brother was diagnoised with a heart murmur as a small child. He eventually grew out of it, which the cardiologist expected. He played golf and football from the time he was 8 until he graduated high school and led a very active and normal life. He always had his sports physicals done by his cardiologist, to ensure his condition wasn't worsening and that it was safe for him to play sports and he took antibotics before each dentist appt (this is very important the cardiologist can explain why). He is now doing very well and is 24 yrs old. Stay on top of it, ask lots of questions and your child hopefully will never really understand because it won't affect her life. Also, they found later that my brothers was caused by mishaped heart valves, and that other valves in his body were mishappened, such as the valve to his bladder and his sphinter valve connecting his stomach to his eusophogus. They found this out because he was getting acid in his mouth and it was eating away at his teeth. The dentist told my parents he was eating too many sweets and soda, but it wasn't that. Keep your eye out for this kinda of thing, he had to have 2 surgeries to fix them, but still did very well. I wish you and your baby the very best. Feel free to reply if you want to talk any more.

Hi D.,
My 3 yr. old was diagnosed at her 3 yr. checkup...it was the 1st time that her murmur was heard. She was sent to have an ECHO done (which is an ultrasound of the heart) but she was at the age where she pretty much freaked out and wouldn't let them touch her with the wand. So then they had her see a ped. speacialist that comes down to the hosp. once a week. He was able to tell by listening that her's is innocent and wouldn't require anything further. Not sure if your child will go through the ECHO or just be listened to. It's all harmless and you shouldn't have any probs with her being so young. Like the other mothers have said...it's all fine, most will grow out of them or you might have to give her something when it's time for her dentist checkups. Hope that this helps! Take care!

Hi D.,

My heart murmur was found during my physical before I started elementary school when I was 5. I remember them sending me for the Echocardiogram then, and also again before I ran track in middle school. I had to have another physical then and another doctor heard the murmur and wanted to make sure it hadn't gotten any worse.

I have never had any problems with mine. Sometimes I can feel my heart skip a beat or be a little irregular. Every once in a while it will make me short of breath or dizzy for a moment, but nothing that has ever really bothered me too much. Last year I did the test where you wear the monitor on your body for 24 hours just to test if your heart is beating correctly because I was going through a lot of stress at work. Everything again came back normal...just a slight irregular beat.

I'd say everything will be fine with your daughter. When I went for my first doctor's appt. to confirm my pregnancy back in August, the doctor was doing his regular exam and wanted to listen to my heart. He kind of looked at me funny, and I said you here the murmur don't you. Most do stay with you for your entire life. This is just my experience with them. :-)

My daughter has what they call a flow heart murmur. It is nothing really sometimes you can hear it and other times you can't. My uncle also has one and he is in his late 50's.

Good Luck I hope it turns out the be nothing. Also when you are born you are born with an opening in your heart it's called a PDA (patent ductus arteriosus) and they normally close on there own, some have to have meds and some evern surgery (My daughter had the surgery for this but she was also a premiee) Here is a link for you about it: http://www.lpch.org/DiseaseHealthInfo/HealthLibrary/cardi...

With my daughter I had to Dr because I moved. I had an earlier ultrasound and another one with the new D at 7 monthes because he said there was no way I was that small at 7 monthes the 2 due dated were june 23around there and july 20th she was born at 5lbs 15 oz in June 17.
She had a heart murmor and that did scare me she ended up having a little hole in her heart but that is a common thing within a year it was compleatly gone. There was not surgury or treatment and she was a normal health happy baby now a testy pre teen LOL
Just be up and reserch the heart murmor as to know what the Dr is saying when you do talk. So relax and things should be fine. This was my first child so you could imagin the worry.

My daughter was diagnosed w/ a heart murmur @ 18 mo (she is 2 now). I found out it is not unusual to have a heart murmur when they are under 2, it is called an innocent murmur. It doesn't become an issue unless it continues past the age of 2. Hope that is a little reassuring. She is going for her 2 yr well baby soon, so we will find out then if she has outgrown it or if she will need to see a specialist. good luck.

I work with children in a medical sense and I was wondering which cardiologist you are going to see. I have been very impressed by Dr. Angelo Milazzo. His practice is called Duke Children's Cardiology..I am not for sure on the exact name, but he is wonderful. I will pray for you as you go through this!
