Growing or Something Else?

Hey girls! I have an 11 month old baby girl who is amazing. I have never had any real concerns with her all this time. However, recently she has become extremely tired. She will have two or three naps a day, sometimes three hours long and an hour later will want to be put down for the night. Yesterday in particular she had two small morning naps, then we went for our walk in the afternoon and she fell assleep during. I got her home, still assleep, and she stayed down for a while. I went in and checked on her andy she was just laying there awake. Normally she will call for me or make some kind of noise to let me know that she has woken up. This was at 4, and at six, she was showing all the signs to want to go to bed. I kept her up until 7:30 (her normal bedtime) and she slept 12 hours (her normal amount).
What do you think? Just a growth spurt? Maybe she is trying to learn how to walk? I was just wondering what your experience was with all of this. Everything else seems to be pretty normal, maybe a touch more fussy, but not much.
Thanks Girls, I appreciate the responses ahead of time!

I would take her to a good pediatrician immediately. My kids go to Dr. Kathryn Ballard in Prescott. ###-###-####) Sleeping that much is of great concern when it comes to a child of any age. Thinking of you.

You must rule out the possibility of illness. Get her a complete physical right away. It could be something minor such as being anemic, but it isn’t normal for a child to be that tired.

Hi Nonny,

Your daughter isn't behaving normally even if she is growing. I would suggest the Dr and quickly. Not to overly stress you, but it isn't normal at all. It could be simply her iron is low....has she been eating normally and healthily?? It could be something worse, not to share too many details, but I had a son who was healthy as an ox and on a Wed he was more tired than normal. He slept an hour more than normal. Then, he didn't want to eat dinner that night, he wanted to go to bed...the next a.m., wasn't better so I took him in...they said he was fine and probably was trying to shake something off (virus/cold). Thursday night he did nothing but lay in our arms listless. Friday a.m., he was gone. He was 21.5 months old. It turned out to be a virus that caused an infection around his heart. I think they now call them superbugs - it was 2002. Go to the Dr. please. God Bless You!!!

Babies this age need a total of about 14hrs of sleep in one day. Typically about 11 at night and 2-3hrs during the day broken into 2naps. If she's doing anything much more than this for more than a day or two, I would take her to the doc. How is she otherwise? Eating ok? Interacting and Playing ok?

My baby did the same thing! She is 13 months old now, but last month she went to sleep at 9:30 a.m. and didn't get up til 2:30 p.m.! I was a bit concerned. I went in and checked on her a few times and all was well, so I went ahead and let her sleep. I figured she needed it! I finally decided that it was because she was teething. Around this time she had been having fevers on and off. She responded well to tylenol. And a bit crankier than usual. But, shortly after her sleep-a-thon out popped 3 upper front teeth all at the same time!

She is still my sleeper, however! She is my 5th baby and I've discovered that some babies just like it more than others (thank goodness for me!). She still takes a 3 hour nap in the morning and about 1 to 1 1/2 hour nap in the afternoon and goes to bed around 6:30/7:30 p.m. and sleeps til 6:00 a.m.

Good luck and enjoy the nap times! :o)

Is she taking in enough fluids? Make sure she is not dehydrated...my daughter gets that way if/when she is getting sick. But, yes, could definately be a growth spurt! Just use your intuition...

Hi N....

Don't know if there have been any significant changes to your schedule lately, which can cause babies to get out of whack, so to speak. And yes, they tend to sleep more when going through growth spurts, in my experience. HOWEVER, any time something has you this concerned, call your pediatrician. He/she can do a simple blood test. Could be your daughter is anemic (low iron)...could be a blood sugar thing (doubtfully)...but whatever the outcome, you will have peace of mind!!! Prayers and best wishes to you and yours!

N.-

If this is not typical for your little girl, there is something going on that she can't tell you. I would take her to the doctor ASAP. YOu didn't say how long this has been going on for, so if it is a day or 2 maybe growing. A week or 2 somthing else.

Good luck. I have 3 girls and they are such a blessing.

I have not experienced this myself with my 2 children.

Take her to the doctor to check. Has she had her blood/hemoglobin test yet? At a certain age (I think it was at 12 months of age) they do a blood test for the well baby check-up, to check for anemia.

Along with her fatigue...is she still eating normally? Make note of any other changes in her... so that you can discuss it with her Pediatrician.

Take care,
~Susan

N.,

In my experience with my children, the behavior you described is not normal. The times my children behaved that way was when they were fighting infections...usually ear infections. I would have her pediatrician check her out.

Good Luck.

Hi N.,
I reccommend checking her iron levels. My nephew was a lot like that, and it turned out that his iron was very low. He took supplements for about a year and we saw change immediately! Now he's 2.5 and off supplements.
Good luck

something else, not growing. I have 4 kids, none of them acted like this unless something else was going on. Look under her bottom eye lid, does it look normal? I would take her to the doctors ASAP and get her checked out. Could be she is comming down with a virus, but it could be more serious. Get her checked.

I would have your Dr ck her out. My son did somthing siminular. I found out later he had an ear infection. They said his pain tolarance was very high. If I had not taken him into the Dr I would have never know he had the ear infection. I hope your baby is fine, could be a growth spert, but better to play it safe.

I wouldn't worry about it right away. It probably is just a growth spurt or a change in her balances that is increasing her desire for sleep. Watch her for awhile and it should go away with a little time. Make notes of times and lengths of her sleep so you can have them on hand if the doctor needs some information, but unless this goes on for a significant period of time I wouldn't even worry. If you notice other changes (sleepy even after a good long nap, not wanting their foods, moody, extreme changes in diet or daily routine, crying or fussing more than normal, or unhealthy color) it would be time to talk to your doctor. Little people sometimes need more sleep, more food, more of whatever it is they need to grow. If you are concerned at all, just go to the doctor. I think I went to the doctor a thousand times with my first son and I would rather be over-zealous and have the doctor tell me he is fine than find out I should have taken him to the doctor months ago. Good luck, but don't stress.

Hi N.,
It may be nothing, but wouldn't you rather know that it is nothing?

Yes, it's true that when some children have growing spurts or when they are teething heavily, they have a tendency to sleep more, and be a tad more lethargic and grumpy (mainly because they ARE tired during growing spurts, or the teeth or growing limbs are actually painful).

Nevertheless, from my experience, after two three days, children are usually back to their regular selves. If you have any doubts, a simple blood test and urine test could reveal answers. You would not want to pass up an opportunity to tackle a potential health or dietary issue early on. And like I always say, better know that it's nothing than let something fester. And only you know your child best: trust your judgment. Listen to your gut feeling. Many times, its' right on!

In friendship and support,
V.

How long has this been going on? It could be that she is getting a virus or maybe she is just growing. However, for your own piece of mind you can always call the doctor. If they think it is anything to worry about they can check her out and if needed run labs on her. It really could just be normal though. Maybe she is just a relaxed little girl. :) God Bless!

If you're consulting us, you know as her mother that something is not right. Veer on the safe side & just take her to the doctor.
It's probably just be a growth spurt, but get the reassurance from a doctor that it's not diabetes or something else.

hey N., i't sounds to me like a growing spurt, I know my 3 kids , you can talk to her pediatrician, so you can have peace of mind. Is her eating OK? if that's OK she's probably OK, but talk to her doctor so you can feel good about everything. Also as your little girl grows and see's and feels the love you have for the Lord, she probably will too. Let me know how things turn out. Mother for 24 years. J.

Is it possible to put her down for one 2-hour nap in the morning around 9:30-10:00 A.M. and then another afternoon nap, if she wants, at around 2:00 P.M.? That's my daughter's schedule (she's 17 months now). However, when she turned 1 year old she started fighting the afternoon naps so on the weekends she generally just takes her morning nap but during the week with the nanny she takes her afternoon nap because the nanny still wraps her.
