Fever Blisters in Children's Mouths

On Friday we found outthat our son has a viral infection, of course he can't be given anything for a viral infection, we can only wait it out. We were given Lidocain for numbing on his tounge, because of the blisters in his mouth, it makes it hard for him to eat anything. He hasn't really ate a meal since Thursday. I just want to know if anyone else has gone through this problem and how long it may take to get through it. He hasn't slept good in the past few days, and when he does sleep, he wakes up crying and pointing to his tounge. I've given him pain medicine and it does seem to help, but it's just so hard to watch my baby go through this. Please tell me any home remedies I can do to help him get through this.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you guys so much for the information, after some research and a call to the doctor, we did find out that it is hand, foot, and mouth disease. We're just going to have to wait it out for the next few days. Luckily, she said it takes about 7 to 10 days, we're almost at day 7! Hopefully it will get better soon, but I will try the Maalox and Benadryl heck, I'll try it all!!! ;-)

My son had the same thing or something very similar, and when we took him to the doctor, she said that we could mix Malox and Benedryl together and show him how to put it in his mouth and then spit it out. We had to practice several times with water first. He got them about a week and a half ago, and the ones in his mouth are gone, but he still has them on his throat. He didn't really eat or drink anything for a week and then he slowly started eating. The hardest part for me was that he was so hungry and wanted to eat so badly, but everything, even water hurt him. I hope this helps and that your little feels better soon! J.

Hello T.,
My daughter had the same thing when she was younger. The Doc diagnosed it as hand, foot, mouth. She had blisters in all 3 areas. For her mouth though I gave her ice pops, the cold helped freeze her mouth. It took a few days though before she was actually eating solids. Try in the mean time Pedisure since he is not eating his regular diet. It will get better, faster if he stays away from solids that will irritate the sores. Good luck and I hope he gets better soon :-)

For the eating, have you tryed anything like pediasure that he can drink, that might help him heal faster if he has nourishment.

Is it thrush? White cottage cheese looking blisters in his mouth? If it is, try some stuff called violetia (I think, it's purple, and yes will turn the inside of his mouth that way temporarily).

Best of luck!

Oh T., I feel your pain!! So sorry for your child.
I was thinking to try and give him some Pedialyte to drink, so that at least he can be hydrated...also, how about giving him some chilled, blended fruit (like a smoothie)? The icy sensation may help in numbing his mouth. Definitely nothing hot. That's all I can think of right now. Good luck!

i used to have them as a child they called them fever blisters. my mom made me gargle with salt water. as i got older i decided to forgo the water and just rubbed salt in them it helped a lot. it sounds horrible but it helped heal them. mine lasted about a week at most. also popsicles help with nourishment and soothing the burn.

I'm e-mailing my mom who is an expert on herbs and natural remedies and I'll let you know what she says. In the meantime, I'd try hydrogen peroxide - diluted with water (I'd use a q-tip or cotton pad and then apply it to his mouth). That should take care of the blisters. God bless!
