Hello Moms,

I am wondering how likley a false positive pregnancy test is? Has anyone out there ever had this? I know that a false negative can be fairly common, but not sure about the other way around. My husband and I have been trying for our second for 6 months now. I took a HPT this morning (two of them) and their was a second line on the test indicating pregnancy but it was VERY faint. It is also several days before my expected period. I should be due on the 20th, but I was eager to see if it showed anything today. I am trying not to get to excited just incase it is not accurate, but I can't help it. Any thoughts or anyone ever had a false positive? Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone! That is what I thought. I took another test today, I know I am crazy, but I just don't believe it since we have been trying for awhile, anyway the line was not faint by any means today....clear as day. YEAH! I am calling my doc this afternoon! Thanks again!

Congrats! I believe the line is faint because your body is only producing a small amount of the hormone they use to detect pregnancy, but if you are getting even the faintest line, that means your body is producing SOME of this hormone (when the egg nestles into the lining of your uterus it begins to secret this hormone - just saw a program on it on Discovery Health Channel :) ...it is only produced when you ARE pregnant :) Congrats again!!

False positives basically don't happen, because the pregnancy test detects a hormone that is ONLY secreted during pregnancy. Congratulations!!!! I was able to detect both of my pregnancies around 10-12 days post-ovulation.

I was told that there is no such thing. It's only positive if you're pregnant.

Congrats!

I too had a VERY faint second line with my second pregnancy. It was so faint in fact that when I first looked at the test I didn't see it. I'd say you are probably pregnant. Best wishes and good luck.

I had a faint line with my last pregnancy. So faint that I thought I was imagining it and had to get a couple of second opinions. My husband saw it right away. I really had to squint. My good friend took photo of it and loaded it to her computer and darkened the entire photo- In the dark photo the line was clear as day! My son is 15 months old :)

CONGRATS!!

I don't think a false positive can really happen since you need the pregnancy hormone in your system to get a positive result. I also had a very faint line when I tested with my son. But I was pregnant! I would probably take another one in a couple of days...but I bet your prego! Congrats!!
