How long does it take for a baby to get over an ear infection? My 9 month old has one, we went to the doctor on Monday night and she has been on antibiotics for 3 days. Her fever is down, but she still doesn't feel good.

What can I do next?

Might be FOOD ALLERGIES!! Short story - I found out my son was allergic to dairy when he was only 3months (he was in the hospital for other issues.) A few months later I had a friend with a 10mo old whose son kept getting ear infections and other symptoms that were typical allergy symptoms. Her doctor never once mentioned allergies, just kept treating the symptoms. When I mentioned to her that sounded just like allergies and told her doctor, he never thought about allergies!! Get your baby tested. Or simply start elliminating stuff from their diet. Milk 1st for 2 weeks If the baby doesn't get better try soy, egg, nuts, gluten, etc. It takes 1 week to get all of the allergen about of their system. If you're nursing, you have to elliminate it from YOUR diet! Challenging, but way helpful for you to lose weight :)

Yep. Second on the chiropractor. We never even gave the antibiotics! The chiropractor fixed the ear infections (including a bad double) in usually just ONE visit! We would notice a big difference almost right away.

Take her to the chiropractor! My daughter had double infections, and I took her the same day she started the antibiotics. She felt better the next day! I've seen chiropractic treatment help at least 15 kids with ear infections, whether just one or recurring ones. My kids have been adjusted since birth, it's very safe. Find one that works with infants and try! Hope she (and you!) feel better soon :)

It really depends on the severity of the infection and whether or not the anti-biotic is really working.

Our daughter had tubes for the first time at 10.5 months. She had 5 ear infections that season. She had tubes again at 2 because they'd fallen out. Unfortunately, she's prone to ear infections, and we know all too well.

Call your pharmacist and ask how long it should take for the antibiotic to be at therapuetic levels. It can take a few days.

The current guidelines for treating ear infections are to start with a weak antibiotic and gradually move to stronger ones.
It should go like this:
1. amoxicillin
2. Augmentin
3. Omnicef
4. consultation with ENT

Good luck!

We have had our fair share of ear infections and a set of tubes. Usually, my kids are significantly better within 24 hours. However, there have been a couple times where the antibiotics have taken a few days to work. There was only one time that the bacteria was completely resistant to the antibiotic so we were given something else that worked (after 4 days, he still felt horrible and had a fever). There is a chance that it's not working. If she's not better by Friday, I'd most definitely take her back in before the weekend. If she continues to have frequent ear infections, I suggest buying a Dr. Mom otoscope off of Ebay. I took it in to my pediatrician and he taught me how to use it. Lastly, put her on probiotics immediately. You can get them at HEB, People's Pharmacy, etc. I used to use Jarrow's powder for infants. You can mix it in applesauce, yogurt, bottles, juice, place some on the breast for the nursing babies, etc. Good luck.

Many times the ear infection is caused by a virus and not a bacteria infection. The anitbiotics only work on bacteria and not viruses. So, it may just need time to run its course. Doctors just give the antibiotics for ear infections because 1. it makes us as parents feel like we are doing something and 2. the only way to tell if it is a virus or a bacteria is to do a tap so, the easy thing to do is is just give the prescription.

I've heard of the chiropractor thing but have never tried it. I'm too afraid too. I guess I've heard stories of babies getting long term damage from it. So, if you go that route research your chiropractor well.

Antibiotics continue to work for 10 days after completion. She should be feeling a little better everyday. It is not uncommon though for ear infections to take 2 rounds of antibiotics. If her condition gets worse instead of better or she is still not feeling good after 10 from completion take her back to the doctor. Sometimes though, the antibiotic can dry their ears up till there ear drums temporarily invert, this can also cause discomfort but will clear itself up in few days. I would say if she is still hurting or in discomfort after the 10 days from completion take her to the doctor and make sure that the ear infection has cleared up.
