We need a new dishwasher. We really didn't like it anyway! Do any of you have a dishwasher that you love that actually works well. I have heard that the key is to getting one with a food disposal in the bottom. If yours has this option, do you like it? Is it worth it to spend the money for a really expensive one??
The sound level is unimportant to me. I don't really mind the noise. I just want clean dishes without tiny food particles left behind.

I love my dishwasher. She is 17 and her name is Cheyenne. Occasionally we do have a problem with food disposal, but usually a polite conversation solves it, for a while anyhow :) I don't think I'll be trading her in for another, although she has indicated that she would like to retire and be replaced by a robot.
I adore my dishwasher. He's about 6'2", slim, furry of face and chromy of dome, and a wonderful partner. I usually cook, he usually cleans after dinner, and sometimes we switch. He cost a lot: my life, my all, but it was so worth it! Thirty-two years this week!
My dishwasher is 43 years old and has had NO problems with maintenance or food disposal. (I know how to scrape plates into the trash!) I'm pretty sure I am worth every penny. ;)

I got my Kitchen Aid in 08. It is closer to the top of the line Kitchen Aid, white model and stainless inside. At that time, I spent roughly $1100.
I LOVE this machine. The cycle is a bit long but my dishes are clean. No issues with it whatsoever.
Peg M, I was thinking similarly. I am the dishwasher. I never use mine. I rather like washing dishes the old-fashioned way. My son does use it weekly though.
Geez, I think I might have the same dishwasher as TF, same year, too. KitchenAid, stainless inside, white outside, don't know the model name or number. And it's awesome. I love it.

We have a kitchen aide and hate it. We bought it on clearance, don't do it. It is no better than anything else out there. The wheel on it broke off too. It runs for hours and is really loud. Most of all it's just kind of crummy. Good luck!
Bosch. Best dishwasher I ever had, hands down (at 2 different houses). The dishes came out spotless every time, and it was nearly silent (I know you say you don't care, but once you've had a silent dishwasher, you wonder why you ever put up with a noisy one).
The house we just bought has a GE. Meh. I wouldn't recommend it. I'm forever having to run things through again because they didn't get clean the first time.
We have had KitchenAid dishwashers at 2 houses, as well. One thing you should be wary of on KitchenAid dishwashers is that the door is very heavy (you wouldn't notice normally because it has a hinge that makes the door open and close easily). However, the hinge mechanism is made of PLASTIC. We had to replace the plastic hinge on each of our KitchenAid dishwashers, and on one of them we had to do it twice (it's quite a chore, too, let me tell you). For that reason, I wouldn't recommend a KitchenAid, even though it did clean the dishes well.
I have a maytag that is horrendous. I hate it and am waiting for the day it breaks so I can get a new one. It doesn't have a trap in the bottom so any and all food particles just cycle around the inside. My MIL has a Miele that is amazing. It is totally silent. You would never know it is on. And the dishes come out sparkling. I will be getting this as soon as I take a baseball bat to my maytag.

I got a GE Profile many years back that is still going strong (about 17 years). It does have the food disposal in it. The extra sound proofing makes it a joy as you can't tell it is running.
Check on the type of soap you are using in the machine as this may be causing dirty dishes. Our son has a low end GE (builder supplied) and hubby suggested CLR in a cycle. This cleared up the problem and he has had clean dishes every since.
I can't say much about the Bosch as it was an overseas model in a renovation and we were only in the unit for about six months and moved back state side. I will admit I did like the stainless steel interior and exterior but there was a very sharp angle on the inside and I got cut when cleaning up.

I bought a very basic Frigidaire in 2010. It came as a set with my fridge and stove. It works well, it is energy efficient and it is pretty quiet. I do not have a food disposal.

I've been doing research on them, and really, from what I can tell, what you get at the really expensive level is the noise reduction. If you don't mind that the dishwasher makes some noise, you can get a reliable good dishwasher for far less $$. If having one that makes very little noise is of high priority to you, then you have to go with more expensive ($800-$1000 price range).
I'm leaning towards the high-end KitchenAid at this point. It's ~$800 and one of the quietest out there - which is important to me because I have an open floorplan, and currently, if the dishwasher is running, it's hard to hear the TV in the living room.
Ours is a Kenmore (it came with the house).
