My daughter just went through the same thing. It was a virus and the Dr told us not to come to the office but try the BRAT diet. It worked but took a couple days. Dr said to give lots of extra hugs too :)

Hi D.,

There is something you can get at the pharmacy called Florastor. It's a GREAT "good bacteria" powder that adults and children need in our bodies.. Whenever my son (3.5) gets dirrahea, I get it for him (it comes in children and adult form)..You have to ask for it behind the pharmacy because they don't keep it on the shelves.. I just mix it in his juice and you can't taste it at all..
Good luck!

Acidophilus bifidus will restore the good bacteria in his gut. You can get it from your pharmacist or chiropractor. Also, make sure he gets plent of water. Water is better than sports drinks. The sports drinks are ladened with sugar and chemicals, which can irritate his gut more.

Feed him things that are binding. Stay away from dairy. If it continues,
call your pediatrician.

Hey D.,

Obviously, make sure he's drinking plenty of fluids! But besides that... I'd cut out a few fiber-containing items from his diet - if he's getting too much. It would help his system calm down for a few days, don't do it for too long though, he does need the fiber, but if you want to naturally slow down diarrhea, I'd take out high-fiber items and throw in some gentle starches. I agree with Denise - the BRAT diet is a good one. It'll help his digestive tract chill out a little and catch up.

If things don't change though... I mean after a few more days and diet changes - I'd call the Dr just to look into a possible virus. But if there's no fever, you should be able to handle it on your own.

Good luck!

Please call your pediatrician. They may know of a virus going around that is causing the diarrhea and may be able to suggest how long to anticipate it affecting your son or be able to call in a medication.

The BRAT diet (as many of the other moms have suggested) is probably going to be their recommendation initially along with some kind of electrolyte drink to prevent dehydration.

Otherwise, in most cases, it may just need to run its course (no pun intended).

Good luck. I hope he's better soon.

Blueberry juice or blackberry juice. Just a glass, not to much it will bind them up.

One of the most important things is to be careful of dehydration. You may want to ask his doctor about using an “Oral Rehydration Solution” (such as Pedialyte).

from: http://familydoctor.org/online/famdocen/home/children/par...

“Oral Rehydration Solution” can be purchased at most grocery stores and drugstores. If you don't have access to store-bought ORS, you can mix 8 teaspoons of sugar and 1 teaspoon of salt in a quart (4 cups) of water. This mixture lacks potassium but is otherwise a good ORS. You can supply some potassium by adding a cup of orange juice to your homemade ORS or feeding your child some banana.

• Avoid foods with a lot of sugar and fat, such as ice cream, gelatin, pudding and fried foods. These may irritate your child's stomach and digestive tract.
• It's best to avoid dairy products for 3 to 7 days.
• Try bland foods such as BRAT diet - bananas, rice, applesauce, toast, saltine crackers and unsweetened cereals.
• Most children can return to their usual diet about 3 days after the diarrhea stops.

Hope he feels better soon!
