De-Wrinkling A Wedding Dress

Hi Ladies! Here's a light-hearted question... :-)

The wedding is in May. :-) I found the perfect dress (on Craigslist of all places...in my exact measurements, for $1000 less than retail!). It's already been cleaned, and no alterations are needed.

But it's all wrinkly!

I thought perhaps someone here would know: How to I get the wrinkles out? It's a big dress...so when I put it back into the bag, it will just get wrinkled again. I don't want to look like I just pulled it out of the bag on my wedding day....but don't want it to get dirty...and don't want to spend 5 hours ironing it either! Is there a trick I'm not aware of that brides use on their wedding day?

Advice, please!

Link to my dress in the SWH....

What can I do next?

Thank you so much for the advice, ladies! You're wonderful!

I'm going to take it to be cleaned, and also price steamers for the big day. Now I have to decide if I want to wear a petticoat to fluff it up or not. :-)

Wow! Beautiful and complicated looking. I wouldn't touch that dress myself with a 10 foot pole - with my luck, I'd ruin it. Like some other ladies have said, take it to a professional who knows what they're doing.

Really, it's a gorgeous dress - you will look stunning. And nice job on the saving $$!

Try calling a dry cleaners and see if they have a garment steamer and they could do it for you.
I have always wanted to buy one of those things but could never buck up.

Gorgeous dress BTW. Congrats!

ETA: OH MY WORD! !LOVE THAT GOWN!!!!

We traveled from DC to Boston to get married. My dress was in the wedding bag.

The hotel had a steamer and actually steamed it for me. Check with where you are getting married and see if they will do something like that for you.

You might want to see if there is a bridal shop near where you are getting married and see if they offer the service for brides!!

CONGRATULATIONS again!!! may God grant you many happy years together!!

Congratulations!!

Take your dress to a dry cleaners or a bridal shop in your area. They can steam it for you.

My wedding dress fit me perfectly except for the fact that it had room for hips that I don't have so it had to be taken in. My bridal shop covered my dress so I could hang it without it getting wrinkled, but they did that for me like a day before my wedding.

Just coordinate someone taking care of it a day or two from your wedding so that it can hang and not look like you just took it out of a bag.

I never would have attempted to iron my wedding dress.

Professional is the only way to go.

Best wishes!!

Are you purchasing bridesmaid, mother of the bride or even bridal accessories at one shop? That could be your "in" to ask if they would steam your gown! Most high end shops have steam closets for gowns, it would take FOREVER to hand steam all those gorgeous layers! Plus, professionals know what they are doing and you can burn yourself pretty easily with a steamer (been there, done that!).

Congratulations!!!

You can buy a good quality steamer for under $100. O. with a stand and a large wand (have purchased them for work).
Install an eye hook in your ceiling in a corner so you have somewhere it can "live" out of the way until you get dressed.

(Honestly, depending HOW wrinkled it is, I would seriously consider having it dry cleaned again.)

Take it to a bridal shop and have them do it for you. It will cost money, and possibly more because you didn't purchase from them (when I bought my dress, pressing/preparing it for the big day was something they offered "complimentary"). But I wouldn't go at anything of that importance with a household iron or steamer...leave it to a professional...

Congratulations!!!! And gorgeous dress!!! Wish you could post pics after your wedding on here :(

I would have it done professionally. with all the details and rouching, I would be scared to ruin it or it would take FOREVER to do.

Mine will be steamed after the alterations are completed, but my daughters needs to be ironed and I'm scared to do that even.

Beautiful dress and congratulations on your upcoming wedding!!

If it were me, I would take it to my personal dry cleaners for a professional steaming, and most likely re-cleaning them let them package it properly so you can limit wrinkling. THEN, on the wedding day, I would use a steamer (only after I knew exactly how to use it, etc) to make sure it is perfect.

Get it dry cleaned and hang it from a high ceiling where it only hangs down. Not in the bag all bunched up, but hanging straight down.

Then as the wedding comes closer you can buy or rent a steamer and freshen it up but filling the steamer with distilled water, so it won't have any minerals in the water, then take the steamer and go underneath the ruffles and gently steam them from so they are fluffy again. It won't hurt for you to do this a couple of times. We do this on the formals in our store and it just works like they were ironed but won't melt the fabric like actual ironing will.

A steam iron WILL melt this fabric. A steam iron help parallel to the fabric to steam it WILL melt this fabric. A clothing steamer is not a hot metal plate that water hits and makes a stream of hot hot hot steam. So it is totally different.

You'll need to buy a nice but not expensive steamer if you want to practice and make sure this works for you.

But if you have it cleaned first that will take out all the deep wrinkles and give you a smoother fabric to start with.

Run the shower in a closed door bathroom, put the dress on a hanger in the room (not near the water, the steam will get it out.

for stubborn wrinkles use an iron, but only iron the dress with a white sheet between the iron and the wedding dress. Wet the white sheet down and use a hot iron. The white sheet will protect the dress.

I would just call your local dry cleaner and set an appointment to have it pressed or steamed 2 days prior. Or, you can call a local bridal shop and ask how much to have it steamed. Veil too if you're wearing one.

Beautiful dress - I had a Maggie, too!!
