I didn't stop spotting for almost 4 months. Yes, it was annoying, but also normal. I never had any cramping, just the spotting. Once the spotting stopped, I rarely had periods and no other issues. I loved it, and will get it again after the next baby.

I had the same problem. It took awhile to stop. It takes from a month to three months to stop. After that you will get a period once in awhile and they are very light or you may not have one at all.

Hi K.,
I had the Mirena IUD put in a little over 2 years ago and I love it. I have not had my period since shortly after. I do remember spotting the first few weeks but then it did stop. Everyone is different and I have heard that some people still get there periods the whole time they have it. I don't know much about it so when you go in for your 6 week check up ask the Dr. if that is pretty typical. Good luck!

Last year I got the Mirena put in and immediately started having issues. Along with the bleeding I had constant painful cramping and was bloated. It also felt like I was gaining weight, but it could have been the bloating. After about 6 weeks and after discussing it with my gyno, I had it removed. The pain immediately stopped.

I know I've heard the bleeding stops eventually, but can last for quite some time (I have a few friends who love it because they rarely ever have periods with it in) but my doc said for some, the bleeding continues or like with me, my body probably saw it as a foreign object and it was trying to expell it (thus the severe cramping).

Follow your gut (literally). My body knew something was up and it didn't want that thing in there. I know many have had success if only they can get through the initial bleeding. Good luck.

Hi! Ya, I had the exact same problem. I got mine placed march 28 this year and didn't stop bleeding until all of a sudden after about 6-8 weeks of annoying light bleeding i had what seemed to be an actual period for about 3 days and then the bleeding stopped. I also had a light 2 day period in June (around the time of my normal cycle) and break through spotting one time since and THATS IT. Its SO worth it to keep it in! I know the first 2 months are annoying but its worth it because like I said, I have only had 1 real period since then and it wasn't anywhere near the horrible ones i used to have! I have now had it 5 months and I haven't used any pads since june and I haven't had any spotting since june...its worth it trust me...and from what I'm told and what I have noticed on my self, your periods start going away altogether while its in...just give it time!

I don't know the difference between mariena and a copper IUD, but I had the copper IUD and bled for months until they finally took it out. It was the most uncomfortable type of birth control I have ever used. Now I use the Nuva ring, and it is wonderful. Hope this helps. :o)
