I am trying to figure out which IUD is best. Does anyone have any good or bad experiences with an IUD and if so, what brand do you have?

What can I do next?

I have the Mirena and I love it. I've had it almost a year. I got it because we're done having kids, but neither of us were quite ready to do anything permanent. Plus, I would get menstral migraines while on the pill and my periods were typically 5-7 days long. Since having the Mirena, I occasionally get headaches, but they aren't as bad nor as often. My periods are only 1-2 days and only require a panty liner. And that's when I actually get a period. I've skipped several and the time between them gets longer and longer each time. My doctor told me that within a year, most women stop getting periods all together and it's certainly something I don't miss.

My sister-in-law had the Paraguard copper IUD and her only complaint was very heavy and long periods (typical of that IUD) and she had it removed and was pregnant in 3 months.

The nice thing about an IUD is you never have to worry about it. The Mirena does have a small amount of hormone, but it typically stay localized in the uterus and they say it's safe for breastfeeding mothers. And it can be removed any time if you want to have another baby and fertility returns to normal almost immediately.

With anything medical, there are risks involved, so be sure to read up on them before getting any IUD. I went into it knowing that there were some risks, albeit small and I hope for the best. My only regret was not getting it right after my babies were born. If I'd known how easy it was to insert (even a regular exam was more uncomfortable for me) and how much easier it would make my life, I would've done it sooner.

Hi Haley I have 2 children ages 2 and 9 months. I have used the merina IUD after both of my kids and had no problems what so ever. I really love it I don't have to remember a pill the hormone doesn't effect me like the pills did. I forget its even there. I had it after my first daughter and when we decided to try for number 2. I had it removed and within the first month we were pregnant. They say most women stop having periods but in my case they got a little heavier and lasted a little longer than before. But that wouldn't change my mind about having it. Hope this helps

I have Mirena. Its 5 years effective w/hormones. I have had the most amazing experience over the last 5 years, I decided to get it again. You don't realize it's in.
I have very few periods. I think tops is 3 per year, and if I do, they are very very light and maybe for two days. Maybe~ it's a pretty sweet deal if you ask me. Putting it in is easy. You bleed a little, but its more like spotting. Taking it out is easy. I didn't feel a thing. I would suggest it for any woman. Plus, if you decide to have more children they can take it out.
Hope it helps

Haley - I have the Mirena IUD and absolutely love it. I got it last August and have had no side effects whatsoever. I was having very heavy bleeding after having my son and my dr. recommended the Mirena IUD. My periods have literally stopped. I have some slight spotting once a month, but no cramping, no heavy bleeding, nothing. It is the best form of birth control I have ever used. I highly recommend it.

I have the Mirena. I chose it because many people I had talked to told me that I would have less painful periods and lower flow. This did not turn out to be the case. I bled for about the first three months and I had a period about every two weeks after about a year of this my periods went back to normal. I know that this does not happen with everyone but the choice is completely personal. As far as IUD's themselves I think it is fabulous. I love not having to worry about taking a pill everyday.

I had the Mirena put in after having my son, I bleed lightly off and on for about 3 months afterward but then nothing at all after that. When I was ready to get pregnant again, 19 months later, I went to my doctor to have it removed and that day was the first day of my pregnancy and I'm now 15 weeks along.

Although the bleeding was annoying at first I really liked it, and after my husband got used to the threads he liked it too.

Good luck.

Mirena is amazing, I totally recommend it, if you have insurance that covers it or else it is way expensive.

I had the non-hormonal one... paraguard was the brand, but there is one with hormones and one without!! I LOVED it!! it is the only form of birth control I will ever use now- It allows you to get pregnant again as soon as it is taken out, you don't have that year period where you still can't, it has NO hormones, which was important to me because any hormonal birth controls mess with my moods and my weight... and my skin!! The only bad side I saw with it was that if you happened to get pregnant on it (which it is the same 99.999999 whatever % effective), then it would probably have been a tubal, and if not, the iud would need to be removed immediately and could result in miscarriage anyways. BUT- I had it for 2 years, and never got pregnant, and a lot of my friends use it too, and I've never known anyone to get pregnant with it in, just thought I'd give you the bad with the good!!

I had an IUD it was the copper one Paragard I had it in for about a year and a half and I really liked it because I didn't have to worry about forgetting to take a pill or anything and no side effects! BUT i did get pregnant with it in. We decided we wanted to try for another baby and when I when I went to have it taken out, found out I was already pregnant. Had it removed and there was some spotting with the pregnancy which was scary because of the high risk of miscarriage but everything was fine and now I have a happy healthy 3 month old baby boy. This was just my experience with it and I think I am just extremely fertile and will get pregnant easily no matter what. I was happy with it but I dont know how I would feel if I really didn't want another baby.

I had the mirena for 13 months, but then out of nowhere it perforated my uterus. Which is really rare after the first couple months of putting it in. I was happy with it until this happened though.

Ditto on Mirena! Had it 3mo. and love it. Insertion came with miniamal pain and I had some bleeding for a few weeks while my body adjusted. Now the bleeding is gone, and I don't have a period anymore (not that I would becasue I'm nursing).

I have never used an IUD myself but my best friend had one put in after her twins were born. She started having bad cramping and went to see the Dr. IT turns out that the IUD had slipped or moved somehow and she had gotten pregnant and then miscarried because of the IUD. She had to have it taken out. I don't mean to scare you, just want to inform. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Hi there, A couple years ago I had the IUD with copper, I can't remember the name of it. I only had it in for maybe 2 months. It gave me constant cramping. I was getting back to back infections from it, my body didn't care for it too much. I have 2 children ages 2 and 7.
