Coconut Oil - Oklahoma City,OK

I bought some coconut oil recently and it states on the label that it doesn't need to be refrigerated. I keep it in a cool dry place and it's moldy on the tops of the peaks where I've scooped bits out. The lid has mold and the sides too. I haven't used very much of it either.

Is it one of those things where I'm supposed to know it goes in the fridge? Is this one defective? What did I do wrong?

What can I do next?

Something must be wrong with it. I keep mine in the cupboard and never have had issues. And it's been up there for a while!

Sounds like you contaminated it. Like others have said you need to make sure anything you put in it is clean and dry. The only way mold would grow in it is if you introduced something that could grow mold.

If the contamination went all the way through it could have been contaminated by the producer and that would make it defective. Since it is only on top you are the one that contaminated it. Take a clean spoon remove the mold, take another clean spoon and take off another layer, then continue to use it.

I keep mine in the pantry and I've never had a mold problem.
When ever I get any out of the jar I use a clean dry spoon.
You can keep it in the fridge but it'll be rock hard and difficult to use.
From what I've read, you really have to keep moisture from getting into the jar - moisture allows mold to grow - whether you're talking about coconut oil or anything else.

Unless there's a possibility that something else got into your jar (water or food from a mixing spoon?) then I would call the company to complain and consider buying a better brand in the future.
Mine stays on the counter and is near the built in oven. There were times this summer when our A/C needed service and it wa liquid. It still has no mold. I've had the same jar for nearly a year.

I use coconut oil for moisturizer and hair conditioner and it stays in one of my bathroom cabinets. I've never noticed any mold on the lid or anywhere else.

I do use a clean spoon each time I use it just so it does not get contaminated with something else I may have on my hands.

Sounds defective/contaminated to me. The easiest thing to do is to return it to the store where you bought it. Otherwise, contacting the manufacturer with the lot number or any other numbers on the side/bottom of the container should put them on alert. If it's not labeled to go in the fridge, the consumer shouldn't be at fault. Ideally they will send you a new one or a coupon for a free product. I'd write a respectful "love your product but I'm so dismayed' kind of letter and say you're raising this family and trying to keep them healthy, etc. I'll bet you get a good response.

It's defective! I've been using coconut oil regularly for years. I've never kept it in the fridge. It has never done that. Toss it and get a different one and forget this ever happened!

Mold does not grow on oil/clear fat. I suggest either you've introduced something that does support mold such as a bit of food or it was contaminated when it was processed. I suggest it's most likely that you used a contaminated spoon to scoop it out. Perhaps you used the same spoon you had stirred food with.

I agree that you can scoop all the mold out going deep into uncontaminated portion and sterilized the lid you can use it.

i never keep coconut oil in the fridge, it would be rock-hard and unusable. and i've never had the edible stuff in the cupboard nor the beauty stuff in the bathroom develop mold.
i hate waste, but i'd toss this.

Something is wrong with it. I have coconut oil out and there is no mold on the top or the lid. Where did you buy it? I would possibly contact them about it. If you have the receipt you might be able to exchange it for a new container.

If you put coconut oil in the frig it will get hard and have to set out to warm up before you use it. Also stir the coconut oil and mix it before you use it as mine did separate with the lighter oil on top and the heavier to the bottom.

Good luck and have a good holiday season.

PS If you need coconut oil go to an oriental store.
