My husband wants to go to Austria for chirstmas. Was wondering if any of you had done this, and if you think it is a good idea?

What can I do next?

I have visited Austria many times and loved it!!!

I would go to Southern Germany - and stay at Lake Chiemsee - then you can travel in and around - literally Austria is 15 minutes from the Lake. VERY BEAUTIFUL area!!!

Lake Chiemsee used to be an American "resort" - it was split in two by the Autobahn - one side was the lake (which you can walk across in the winter to the castle in the middle of the lake) and the other side was camping...it was turned back over to the German Government in 1999 I believe.

Check into that - then you can see Neuschwanstein - which is about an hour away....there are several other castles in the area as well. Then Austria is on the Eastern side of the lake....much to do and see!! Skiing in Austria and Switzerland is AWESOME!!!

I haven't been, but everyone I know who has says it's a must! Vienna is evidently the most beautiful Christmas destination on earth! This comes from young and old. Two of the most rave reviews came from two guy friends who were drunken frat boys backpacking around and said it was the most beautiful thing they had ever seen! Myriad coworkers and relatives have said the same, so evidently it appeals to everyone! We plan to do it when our boys are teens. Go! Enjoy!

Oh! You're going to have so much fun!!! The winter markets, the festivals, the decorations, the castles, the snow! One of the most beautiful (is this really REAL? kind of beautiful) places, during that time, in the whole world.

I went to Vienna in July 2010 and thought it was amazing. I can't imagine how beautiful it would look at Christmas. If you can do it, do it. We jumped on the Eurorail and went to Salzburg and that was beautiful as well. We also did the Eurorail and spent a day in Prague. The Eurorail has great packages for getting around the country and the taxis in Vienna were very reasonable.

Go, go, go!

Enjoy the outdoor markets they have with the gluewine (keeps you warm) and some of the food!

Depending where you go you can see Salzburg (Mozart's home), Innsbrock (Olympics), and Vienna. The Swaroski Crystal factory isn't too far from Salzburg. The Eurorail is a good way to get around. Take all the pictures you can and have a good time.

Wish I were going with you.
