Cherries?

I'm making my own baby food for my soon to be 9 month old. I have been looking at the Gerber bottles for recipe ideas. They have an apple/cherry. SO, I went out and bought some cherries to make my own.
NOW, I don't have any idea what to do with them! I know I have to get the pit out. Do I peel? Do I cook? Or just mash?
Any tips or tricks would sure be appreciated!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for the help! After a little trial and error...I finally have cherry puree!
Since I didn't have a cherry pitter, I used a turkey baster!! LOL!! But it got the job done. I boiled the cherries whole, for just a minute or two in just enough water to cover the bottom of the pot. Then let them cool. Used my "cherry pitter" and threw them in the food processor. Simple! Gave my son a little taste. His eyes lit up. Looking forward to giving them to him tomorrow for breakfast with his apples!
Thanks again to everyone for the tips and suggestions!

Hello,
I make my own food also, but haven't made that combo yet. If I did make it I would cook the apples first in water until soft and maybe the cherries a little if they were hard. Then I would put it in the blender and add some water if needed until smooth.

Wash cherries and then cut them in half with a paring knife. Pop out the seed. Simmer them in a small covered pot with the apple (you can add a little water, but probably won't have to.) Stir occasionally until soft. Mash or puree as usual. Very yummy!

Pampered chef has a great cherry/olive pitter. It works so nice and easy for cherries.

Just adding that you can get a cherry pitter (works for olives too!) at Crate and Barrell.

Just a quick follow-up note. You can easily pit cherries and olives by smashing them with the side of a knife. They split open and you can pop the pit right out. Sounds like your boy is eating well!

I believe there are cherry pitters out there some where!!!! I think until 10 monthsish all of babies food should be steamed. I too make our own baby food and I have found that wholesomebabyfood.com has been incredibly helpful. They might have a recipe there. To be on the safe side I would just steam them and then puree them with the apple. Please let me know what you do, it sounds yummy!!

Hi there, yes they love cherries. Next time buy the frozen already pitted cherries. They are normally better quality than the fresh ones and the are a lot cheaper. Also since you are making your own food, I found this website very helpful.
