Well my son's father & I split up for 2 months & are now trying to work things out. He did meet someone & he broke it off w/her but of course now she is saying she is pregnant! She told him she had her tubes tied so of course no protection was used!! Well now she just had the blood test saying positive but its more then likly in her tubes so the docs will just clean her out or something in those terms. IS THIS POSSIBLE!!!!!

What can I do next?

Hi M.,

Unfortunately, it is true. In fact, one of the "side affects" patients are made aware of IS pregnancy. It happens infrequently, but the tubes find their way back together, so to speak, which therefore reopens the path to the eggs.

I hope everything works out for everyone!

I have heard of that but it is a very small part of a %. It also depends on how long ago her tubes were tied. Ali

i think it is more likely that she never had her tubes tied and lied to your husband.

It is definitely possible. Not very common, of course, but definitely possible. I had my tubes tied when my second son was born via c-section in 2000. At that time I was sterilized by having my tubes tied using a modified Pomeroy technique. Basically that means a section of tube was removed and the ends were burned shut. Four years later, in March of 2004, I found out I was pregnant. The result of that was my third son who was born on October 16, 2004. My OB/GYN told me at the time that more often than not, pregnancies as the result of a tubal ligation failure are viable pregnancies. Ectopic pregnancies do happen as well, as my best friend found out a few years ago. She also got pregnant as the result of a tubal ligation failure (she was sterilized using clips). Her baby was in her fallopian tube though and she had to have emergency surgery to remove it.

So, like I said, it's definitely possible. It's still the most reliable form of birth control, but the only thing that's 100% is abstinence.

When I had my tubes tied I was told that if I even suspected I was pregnant, I should go to the doc right away because it is possible; however 99% of the time can't get past the "tie" and therefore would be a tubal pregancy, which WILL eventully burst and cause you to hemoragh. So yes, you can get pregnant (not likely but possible) but you won't carry it.

Yes..the doctor's can only tie those tubes so tight.
As far as him not using protection, the pregnancy should be the least of your worries. When you sleep with him, you are sleeping with anyone SHE'S ever slept with too. If she didn't use protection with him, she didn't use it with anyone else.

Cases like this are not umcommon when the "other women" claims to be pregnant to get the guy back. Ask to see the doctor's report and go to the appointments with her.

Or...cut them both loose and call it a day.

Rare but possible. My doc told me my chances of pregnancy if I got my tubes tied right after birth (as part of a c-section) were 9 in 1,000. If a woman has her tubes tied at a different time (not after birth when it is a separate procedure, which is rare) her chances of pregnancy are 3 in 1,000.

1) Of course it's possible.

2) "clean her out"?! I find it shocking to hear a mother referring to another woman's pregnancy this way.

3) Is this man worth it? You break up for two months and he's having unprotected sex with someone else. I'd think more than twice about patching things up.

I'm sorry for sounding harsh, but you have bigger problems than whether or not this other woman is, indeed, pregnant. NO man is better than a bad one, especially for your little boy.

Personally, I would be far more concerned with the fact that your partner had unprotected sex with someone else while you were split up for two months than whether or not this other woman is pregnant. The second issue is not your issue and there is nothing you can do about that situation. However, the first issue should be your major concern and you can do something about that! If your son grows up seeing you being disrespected by his father, being cheated on by his father and his mother taking it and taking him back, guess what he will grow up to consider a normal relationship between a man and a woman.

Yes it is important for your son to have his father in his life, but it is also important for him to grow up learning what is acceptable in a relationship and what is not. Having unprotected sex with someone else during a short split like that is most definitely not acceptable. If you are really committed to working this out, than you should insist on him being tested for the full spectrum of STD's and DO NOT have unprotected sex with him without this. If he is not willing to protect you by agreeing to this and showing you test results in writing or having you physically present to hear his test results with your own ears than he is not commited to you.

M., I was told it's possible to get pregnant with tubes tied and I even heard that it's possible to get pregnant with tubes cut and tied. I read some of the advice you were receiving here and some things caught my attention. I would be very, very cautious about that man you are working things out with. I can't say what you can or cannot do about this but I would say be cautious because he sounds ify to me to keep. If you broke up again, he'll do it again? Does he really love you? He broke up with you and broke up with her and back with you and will he do that again, break up with you and go with someone else and break up with that one and back to you? For the sake of your son and yourself, you may want to watch your steps with man, please be careful. Also, don't be angry with that girl since she may not thought it was possible to get pregnant, she may be or she may not be, only she knows the actual truth besides God knows. If she is, it's a dangerous thing on her part and also, it's not healthy for her and the baby to be in that situation and she may have thought she loved him not knowing who he really is like. Perhaps, can you have compassion for her...?

Anything is possible. The real question here is why would you take him back? Not only it didn't work out the first time but he got another woman pregnant while he split with you for only 2 short months. If he ever considered you and the small child, he would hold his horse for a longer period of time to sort things out with you and his life.

Hi M.,
It is very rare that a tubal ligation is unsuccessful, but in a tiny percentage of cases (one in so many thousand), this is the case. However, it is also just as possible that this woman never had her tubes tied at all and just tells her boyfriends this, or that she is not really pregnant at all, and lying to try to keep a boyfriend who doesn't want to be with her anymore.
Good luck at working on your relationship.

Hi M., To the best of my knowledge you cannot get pregnant after your tubes are tied. I have had mine done for 25 years. I think you should get to the root of this accusation or story. The woman may be trying to hold on to him with this. I never heard of a faulty tube tying. Best wishes, Grandma Mary
