Bleeding After Tonsils Came out!!!!1HELP!!!

First off - DO NOT PANIC!! When you panic - it raises blood pressure and can cause more bleeding. I know it's easier said than done - however, TAKE A DEEP BREATH - CALM DOWN!!!

The blood from the nose and mouth can be scary. If she's been laying down instead of being inclined, that would cause the vomiting - not only is she getting the anesthesia out of her system, her body is healing. Again DO NOT PANIC.

1. If she didn't follow the recovery directions - tried to eat the wrong thing(s) too soon or didn't take the antibiotic (I didn't have mine out until I was 32 years old), bleeding can occur. I realize that she is five years old - so you need to go over what you have fed her and what she has done since the surgery and let them know.

2. Contact the doctor who did the tonsilectomy - not just the ER - have him involved in this - it's possible a stitch came out - that's what happened to me - and I was bleeding and spitting up blood as well.

3. ICE POPS, CLEAR LIQUIDS, JELL-O - EASY THINGS TO EAT - SHE HAS TO GET SOMETHING IN HER STOMACH...NO CRACKERS!!! NOTHING that can "scratch" on its way down

4. Her stomach will be upset because she is swallowing blood...that upsets ANYONE'S STOMACH - again - CLEAR fluids, ICE POPS not ICE CREAM, consumme (broth) - let her "suck" on small chips of ice as well - that will help with the swelling.

5. Tylenol - with the Dr's permission - it will help with the pain as well and allow her to get some food in her belly - it's not an easy thing - but really - DO NOT PANIC...

My 8 yr old daughter hemorraged a week after having hers taken out but that was because a blood vessel ruptured because she wasn't following the recovery directions. She refused to eat, drink, take the pain medicine, seems my Samantha knows an easier way of doing everything until it turns out to really be the more difficult one. She had emergency surgery that same night. I had my tonsils out when I was 19 and I nursed it bigtime but one thing I do remember was throwing up that old dark blood the morning after......oh man, I cried like a baby. Best of wishes for your daughter's speedy recovery. Any other questions, I'm here.

My daughter (7) had her tonsils removed last Tuesday morning. Same day at night she started vomiting blood and we took her to ER to meet her dr. It is very scary to see a child throwing up like that!
Dr. had to repeat the surgery because one vessel didn't close so blood drippings got into her stomach and made her sick.

One week after it she is still not herself - not eating and drinking well. We 're just taking one day at a time.

I think the dr. should check if there is no bleeding going on in your daughter throat.

I hemorraged after having my tonsils removed at 18 and one of my good friends did as well during childhood. After it happened to me they went it and re-carterized(sp?) the area and after the recovery process I was fine and haven't had any trouble since. It is very scary, but it sounds like the doctors have everything under control. Hope she's doing better soon!

You've got your daughter in the right place for the help you need. It sounds like she swallowed a fair amount of blood, which tends to be very h*** o* the stomach, so she threw it up again. What a terrifying sight that must have been.

Please ask the doctor for very specific instructions next time she's released – what might reasonably be considered 'normal' and what should bring her right back for further observation.

I've known several people through the years who have had complications of one sort or another from surgery. So far, they've all recovered and been fine, eventually. I know it's got to be hard, but it will do neither you nor your daughter any good to wring yourselves out with worry. If you can, take some deep breaths and try to trust that things will work out. They generally do.
