I am a single mom and recently I have lost my job...I have 3 kids ages 17,11 and 9. My 11 yr old has only asked me for a bike.
I really need help this holiday season. Can anyone help or tell me where to go for help? I did the angel tree but they told me that they could not help us. I am desperate.

Thank You,
A.

I think you can try craiglist. I think many people sell stuff there almost like give away. Hope you will have a good holiday.

My church is donating toys to the local food bank. I am sure that in your area there must be an agency collecting toys for families.

In addition, you may want to go on Craigslist and see what is for sale or free.

Isn't there a website called freecycle (I don't know the actual name) but it lets people post items they would like to give away. Maybe my post will jog someone else's memory.

Perhaps there will be a bicycle there among these choices.

Good luck to you. I hope that your holiday is bright.

Try to get your story out locally...I know that last year there was a similar story in our paper and I called to buy the kid a bike and they said they had a bunch of people reach out to help.

Can you sign up for your local Adopt A Family? How about checking on Freecycle (it is a website for people to find homes for things they have to get rid of without putting in a landfill)? People post things that they have to get rid of, you respond if you are interested. People post things they are looking for, others respond if they have it.

try calling your local service groups like the kiwanas club (not sure thats spelled right), the Lions, 20/30 club those type of people. also most motorcycle shops, especially harley davidson, do kids stuff at xmas so call a few of them too. churches are another good source. just call and explain your situation and ask if they can help you or know who can. churches will often supply you with xmas dinner and gifts for the kids. call now and get on those lists! good luck and god bless you! dont be surprised if you get that bike!!

Great suggestions here...

Also though, have your tried speaking to your children about the situation???? They are old enough.
Just keep it low key... but explain to them.
All sit down, as a FAMILY... and talk with them... explain it to them... but that you ALL will try your best... to help each other... and understand that right now... you cannot, just go out an 'buy' things... because there is rent and food and other things to pay as well.
My kids, we talk to them about stuff like that. Not in a way to "burden" or worry them...but they understand well... per their ages and development.

Or go to your local church... and they often will help families such as yours. Now, at this time of year, churches have many outreach programs to help families in need.

Also sign up for social services....

Also do a Google Search for "food pantries" in your area... there are many.

Also, if you cannot buy the bike for your child... do you have family in your area nearby? Maybe Grandpa or Grandma... can help??? Or an Aunty or Uncle?

all the best,
Susan
