Anyone with Young Children Who Sleep in a Room on a Different Level of Your Home

When we were house hunting a few years ago we had a hard time finding a house with all the bedrooms on the one level. We are upstairs and are kids are down. My son had a hard time adjusting. It is great now though,because most of the toys stay downstairs. I just have a monitor in my daughters room and can hear pretty much everything from downstairs through that. i dont think I could have done it if it was a walkout basement though. I would have had to get an alarm for the door I think. Good luck with the house hunting.

We are currently in a rambler with my 10 month old son upstairs and my husband and I down. We are looking to move for various reasons-one of them being we want all bedrooms on 1 floor. Baby slept in a bassinet in our room for 3 months and is now upstairs, with a monitor always on. You can make it work but it's not ideal. Good luck.

I had my first child while living in Texas where it was very common to have the master on the main level and all the bedrooms upstairs. When my baby was 3 months old and sleeping through the night, we put him upstairs in his room. Of course we always had the baby monitor on anytime he was napping or sleeping at night. You can also buy the monitors with video cameras so you can actually see your baby sleeping. Even when he was older, we'd still use the monitor just to make sure we can hear him all the time. It wasn't a bed set up at all since we had a bonus room upstairs, too, so we just spent more time up there.

Sounds exciting! I love house hunting, but also glad I don't have to do it anymore ;) With our first house, the master was on the main floor with 2 bedrooms upstairs. We had our first son at that house - he slept in the pack n play in our room for the first month or so, then we moved him up to his crib (with a monitor always on) and I got a little exercise going up and down, which wasn't a bad thing. If that is the only thing stopping you from getting this house, don't let it. You're right - it will be a great set up for you in a few years (but if you're planning for teenage years there - do they have a lower level after hours escape route that you wouldn't hear them using? Just a thought. But of course your children would never think of disobeying curfew, so you're good ;)) Have fun!
