Im currently a Scrub Tech student doing clincal rotations in a hospital. I was setting up a room for surgery when a nurse accidently hit a foot petal on the bed and took an x-ray. At the time the I was not wearing a lead apron because we were just getting the room ready for the patient. Im 35 weeks pregnant and a little worried. Could anything happen to my baby at this point?

What can I do next?

I had an xray while I was pregnant. My obgyn said that there is no harm in xrays to women when they are that far along. I was 8 months pregnant when I had mine! They only get concerned when its done in the first few months of pregnancy because of all the growth and development that happens in the first few months. Youll be ok!

So first of all i wouldn't worry. 1. Because worrying won't change anything and 2. The one time exposure couldn't possibly cause problems.

I had a chest X-ray while i was pregnant with my second baby and she is just fine! :)

I would call your OBGYN tom just to settle your mind. We drive ourselves crazy!

And with the way the world is going we are getting exposed to much more radiation in our natural environment....the news just said that there is radiation in the rain water in Massachusetts from Japan.

I am wondering why you wouldn't ask someone at the hospital? And also, I feel you need to file a claim with your supervisor, in the same way a work injury is filed. Please do that asap to protect your interest should there be complications.

I wouldn't worry. Women used to get routine X-rays during pregnancy to evaluate the size and shape of their pelvis. I don't think one x-ray this late in the pregnancy will cause any harm.

Hi,

Your totally safe. The reason why they worry is in the first trimester, the fetus is developing and if exposed to any teratogens, could harm the fetus or cause problems in the pregnancy. You are in the 3rd trimester now, and safe. Don't worry another minute about it.
Best wishes~!

I wouldn't worry either. This year for our lego club, the boys and I learned a lot about xrays. Now days the radiation dose is so super low that the lead aprons are used just as a precautionary measure....and really are not needed unless you are getting many x-rays. And you only had one very short exposure. And you are so far along I am sure there will not be any problems.

Of course ask your OB for sure, but no need to stress out about it now.

Of course call your doctor tomorrow.... They will be able to help you.

However, I think you are probably ok. If you google "Xray exposure during pregnancy" it looks like you have little to worry about from one exposure.

I would agree with the other posts, that you are ok (the baby is ok) Of course, none of us can replace an OB, but I have heard of and read of this happening and everything was fine.

This may not ease your mind at all, but I wanted to let you know that there are many times fears can be unfounded. My hubby and I were done having children and I went on a mission trip to Brazil. In the months before the trip, I was getting different vaccinations - yellow fever, hep A, etc. I also took Malaria pills while in Brazil. When I got the injection, the nurse told me not to get pregnant in the next 3 months. I chuckled, and told her that was not a problem. Well, since there seems to be NO birth control that is effective for us.....I was pregnant within 2 months (or so). I had to have more workups and tests throughout the pregnancy, because I was ALSO considered in the advanced maternal age!! Talk about nerve-racking!! My little girl was born perfectly healthy - in fact, she is so smart and bright, it's scary. LOL!!

I'm sure you have (or will) mention this to your OB, but if I were you, I'd try to just relax and put it out of your mind. I know that's hard to do, but I am confident your baby will be fine :)

Congratulations, by the way!

Although x-rays aren't good when you're pregnant a 1 time, short exposure shouldn't do anything. And with you being 35 weeks along your baby is already formed so I bet baby is just fine but just tell your doc. what happened at your next visit just so he knows.
