Had an Xray Before I Knew I Was Pregnant

Hi Mamas,

I'm a nervous wreck. I just found out I'm pregnant. I hurt my back a couple weeks ago and had some xrays taken at a chiropractor's office. I think they did about five or six pics of my torso.

I'm so nervous. Is that level of radiation harmful? Please pray for this baby.

Thank you!

I was doing full MRI scans in my first trimester before I knew I was preggo. Equal to hundrends of x rays. The ob sent me to a level 3 sonogram and the ob there said not to worry even with all I had gone through the amount of radiation needed to cause harm is MUCH higher than any set of tests that can be ran, especially in one setting. Have faith and enjoy being pregnant, it will pass very quickly!

Dear J.:

Don't worry. You've had very little radiation. Also, many years ago doctors routinely did pelvic X-rays to determine the ratio between the mother's pelvis and baby's head. Those X-rays never caused problems. We now have ultrasound, so that's not necessary.

Many, many, many women have tests or medications not realizing they're pregnant. The overwhelming majority of the time everybody is fine. If you have any concerns just mention it to your doctor.

My daughter and I were in a major auto accident. She was unaware that she was 10 days pregnant at the time. The hospital performed xrays, MRI, gave her morphine and hydrocodone for pain. Our precious grandaughter is almost 17 months old and perfect. Congratulations on your pregnancy. Everything will be fine!

I am an xray tech, but a physicist could give you more accurate info. Xrays performed during your 1st trimester is the most dangerous of the three because this is the critical time when all the important stuff is developing. The fact that you had xrays done on your lower back means the radiation was aimed directly at your abdomen. What I think needs to happen now is to determine if you conceived before or after the xrays. If it was before, youre perfectly fine. If after, you should contact the facility to try to determine what dosage of radiation you received and then from there you can determine how harmful it may or may not be to you and your child. Good luck!

It's fine. I had to have chest xrays when I was 12 weeks pregnant with my daughter. She's perfect! :)

I was about 5 months pregnant with my first son and had kidney stones and spent a week in the hospital. They had to do an x-ray on me, and of course they knew I was pregnant and were x-raying directly over the area of the baby! Everything was OK. Of course, it's not ideal to have an x-ray when you're pregnant, but the baby will be fine. Try not to worry too much!

I am so surprised that they would even do an xray on you at your age without having you do a pregnancy test. My daughter's friend went in to have a simple sinus xray and they would not do it until she had a pregnancy test. They require everyone to do it between a certain age group. As it turned out, she was pregnant. I think from what advice you have been given that everything will be OK. I will pray that God will take care of you and the baby and that He will take this worry away from you. You should spend your pregnancy being excited and worry free.

Don't worry! I did the same thing... my back was really hurting and I went to the Chiro, not knowing that I was preggers. He took a bunch of x-rays from all angles...

I called him when I found out I was pregnant to discuss the level of radiation I was exposed to. You should ask your OB about that...

But my daughter was born healthy and happy and is just perfect (in my eyes)... Also, she's brilliant (again, IMHO!) and was just chosen to be in the Gifted & Talented program at her school. So, please don't worry! Everything is going to be great!

While I can't address your concern about the level of radiation & whether it is safe, have you contacted the chiropractor's office? You could make an appointment to discuss this in person with the doc. A phone call might be simpler, but you won't speak to the doc & your concern will not be documented in your chart for future reference. Also make sure you discuss this with the ob/gyn at the next appt just to make sure they are aware. Don't beat yourself up over it- these things happen all the time. Good Luck!!

Hi J.,

I do understand your concern. I went to the dentist and they perfomed routinely X-rays on my mounth and of course I didn't know I was pregnant. All my fears went away when I asked my Ob-gyn and he said if something will happened I would abort it and I didn't! I will deliver this week!.
