3Rd Degree Tearing

I had a beautiful little girl 3 weeks ago and ended up with third degree tearing... After giving birth i was constipated for 12 days [[TMI i know]] & when i was finally able to go again I popped a stitch right next to my rectum. I didnt notice it until just yesterday when i checked to see how the area was healing... Needless to say i have a 1-2 cm opening back there where it shouldnt be! I called the hospital & talked to a couple nurses to get a few different opinions and finally one asked the doctor basically it was said that if the area doesnt heal itself from the inside out then ill require surgery to fix the problem. It looks like its healing up just fine, no redness or signs of infection & the pain really isnt that bad and is well controlled with tylenol. Has anyone else had this kind of problem & actually healed properly?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your responses. I'm going to call my OB on monday to see if he cant get me in. & to reply to some of your responses. They cannot replace the stitch because its had 9 well 10 days now of healing. so unfortunatly that option is out... & i was on stool softners, they started them with my first sip of water after she was born, and when i called my doctor about the constipation he tried putting me on 3 different laxatives... none of which worked. So at this moment in time i stuck between a rock & a hard place. I'm honestly terrified to go to the doctor because of what he might say. But i guess i have to suck it up & go see him. again thanks a lot!

Actually, YES! Similar scenario. 5My doctor left the scar until my next delivery, then repaired it with a few extra stitches. Perfectly fine now.

T.,

I had a 4th degree laceration from giving birth to my first.
While i think i healed well for the most part, imho, i did not heal perfectly. If i were you, i would go in and let them check. You cannot know if you are healing well INSIDE.
Good luck to you,
B.

I had a fourth degree laceration with my oldest. For now til you are healed drink lots of juice (I drank apple juice) and water also a balanced diet. I have a small scar but only I really notice it. Mine healed (even the little tear near my bum) with little pain. Keep it clean, I used a little water bottle to spray water there to clean it because it hurt to wipe. I also used neosporin to keep infection down ( I don't know if that's doctor recommended or not). Hope you feel better soon and congrats on the baby girl!

You should heal just fine. I had a 3rd degree tear was allergic to my stiches and they had to be removed 2 weeks after giving birth and I healed just fine. The same thing happened after my second child was born only it was a 2nd degree tear. Im perfectly normal down there now. They put steri strips on me which were very uncomfortable due to the location but I delt with it. Definatly go see your dr.

I would definantly call the Dr. I had a 4th degree with my first child and had NO problems. After I left the hospital I did not take pain meds but 2 more day and that was just one a day. I had a second degree with my second child and did not take any pain meds after leaving the hospital. I am so sorry this happened to you, but I would for sure call the dr.

I had this happen to me after ny son and it never did heal properly and they didn't fix it until my daughter was born. the DR then recut me and removed the scar tissue(which there will be some) and resewed me up and I still have a small hole there. I went to a surgeon and they told me in order to fix it properly they would have to cut me and my bowel tract layer by layer and then sew it up layer by layer and even then there was no guarantees. I cannot believe they didn't tell you in the hospital to take a stool softener to prevent this from happening.I was told right there with my son and daughter NOT to get constipated and take the stool softener until I healed.. I did that and still popped a stitch so all I can say is go to your ob/gyn and tell them to take a look at it maybe they can sew that area up? if not you will have fecal matter most likely leaking from that area after a bowel movement and will have to make sure you are cleaner than normal there to make sure you dont get any kind of infection.(I know from experience) so talk to a dr and see what can be done NOW before its too late

Hi, yes I had the same tearing...at my 6 week check-up I was told the stitch job didn't "take". Wonderful. I had an inexperinced doc so he kept going to his mentor asking his advice. (Military healthcare, what can you do...that's exactly why I'm against natl. healthcare!)

Then he said he could just re-stitch it. Ummm. No, his mentor said it's already healed that way. So I was told I could just live with it and see how it went (our Grandmothers didn't have stitches and they managed, I was told...LOL) Or they would have to surgically fix. Still trying to decide what to do about it! (7 years later) (Chicken about surgery) Good luck to you. Give it a little time...I was amazed how well my body healed over a few months time.

call your obgyn and tell them you want to come in. its really hard to check yourself and they may be able to put a stich in while you are there. Im surprised your doctor didnt cut you, you heal so much easier that way!

God Bless you!

I would make an appt with ob and wash area gently often with spray bottle...I don't know the name of it, but you could ask your doctor for topical numbing ointment... I used that and it helped alot!

The opinions regarding cutting v.s. tearing are debatable. I chose to not be cut as I learned the tearing after cutting can be worse than just tearing as far as is necessary.

I had a little extra "tissue" that was hanging where normally body tissue is not present and my ob did minor procedure in her office... so I would imagine your ob could put in a stitch...

Good luck!
