Young Mom Needs Advice Post Hysterectomy

I am a 32 year old, otherwise healthy and active wife and mom. Two years ago I had a complete hysterectomy after years of fighting with endometriosis, poly-cystic ovaries, and infertility. That was the best health decision I have ever made. I am pain free and able to enjoy live now! I canNOT take any form of estrogen (none!) because it causes the endometriosis to flair up and I'm back in the same lifestyle of pain and misery again. I refuse to go there again!

Trying to be polite, here's the problem... intercourse hurts. My doctor says it is because I have NO estrogen in my body and my tissue simply has NO stretching capability. He just shakes his head and offers no help. So, I know the why, I just don't know how to fix it. I dread the thought of intercourse because of the amount of pain it causes. My husband has been very patient and kind, so kind! I want to make love with my husband and I'm at my wits end trying to come up with a solution. Any thoughts? (Lubrication doesn't help stretching.)

What can I do next?

I really think a women's health physical therapist might be a great place to start. You may have to travel a bit to find one, but there are lots of things they can do to help. You might even have more going on than just the estrogen issue (muscle tightness, scar tissue, muscle spasms) that the PT can identify and help. Good luck. They should also have some suggestions to help you avoid osteoporosis in the future.

You can get your endometriosis under control by ridding your body of the chemicals and hormones that got the diseaase underway in your body; then you can take strogen.

See a naturpath and/or herbalist. Their focus will be on cleansing. You need to get a lot of plastics and chemicals such as household cleaners out of your body, as well as those found in bleached products like white coffee filters, and things like styrofoam. Ge3tting the hormone mimickers out of your body is key, and so is getting the hormones from meat and animal products. You'll need to shift more towards a vegetarian lifestyle, at least while getting your hormone situation closer to normal.

It might take weeks or months. Get started and you'll feel better on lots of fronts. You'll have more energy and get sick less often, And you'll be able to take estrogen and enjoy sex again.

You can get started by browsing the cleanse aisles of your local natural market. Don't just do a digestive cleanse. You need blood cleansers. Look for detox products that include things like red clover. Gaia Herbs has a cleanse that's very effective. It's called the Supreme Cleanse. It's important to follow the dietary guidelines during your cleanse. It's rigorous, but if you plan ahead by finding cleanse-friendly foods and snacks for the 2 weeks that you're cleansing, it doesn't take so much discipline. And keep in mind that it's only 2 weeks for a lifetime of feeling much better - and reducing your chances of getting cancer and other effects of having these chemicals in your body. When my husband first did the cleanse, he said he felt better than he had since he was 17 (which was around the time that he started working in special effects for the movie industry, which is a career loaded with chemicals).

You'll do great!

I don't personally have the issue you have with hysterectomy to I know someone who does, you're right lubrication doesn't help stretching, and I'm not trying to sound vulgar so please forgive me, but if you go to a "slumber" party or "love works" there is a form of a lubricant that is the closest thing to a woman's natural lubrication on the inside and I did some research and again please forgive me not to sound vulgar but just as someone who has a male to female sex change, they have to lubricate and stretch with an artificial "tool".best thing you can do honestly is talk to a gynocologist about this, don't be shy or ashamed because many women share your problem but feel timid to talk about it and really shouldn't.

Hi, B.. I know this is a very private and sensitive topic, so good for you for seeking advice. One of my best friends is a women's physical therapist in Tulsa, OK and she specializes in helping women with issues like these. You deserve to enjoy sex! Especially with those 6 kiddos. :o) When I was postpartum my friend helped me with my own problems, and after my little bit of work things have been so much better. She gave me a vaginal dilator. I'm sure you can find one online. You choose a size that you feel would work for you, use lubrication, and use the dilator when you have about 10 minutes. The dilator works by gradually stretching the vaginal walls and muscles. After inserting it, you push it gently toward your perineum for 10 seconds, then to each side for 10 seconds. It's like yoga for your vagina. Also something to consider that I didn't know about is that there are certain chemicals in many popular lubricants that can cause extra irritation. K-Y and Astroglide in particular caused me a lot of pain. She told me about the lubricant she uses in her office and with her patient's that you can find online also called Slippery Stuff. (I think. Laugh if you will...) I hope this helps you. If you happen to live in the Tulsa area, my friend's name is Lora Smith and she works at Redbud Physical Therapy Clinic.

I am a young breast cancer survivor and we have to deal with the same problems. You'll never be able to go back to the way things use to be, so try to be more explorative, and find things that give you a thrill - massage and sex books, toys, movies, dirty talk, etc.
Use FemGlide and vibrating toys. They will help lower sensitivity and increase lubrication. Some "movies" could help get you in the mood, and increase natural lubrication. Try Jenna Jameson's series "Where the Boys Arent", it has a lot more fantasy-type style and a lot less "frog-man" grunting. We set up a computer system with DVD player and all our music in our bedroom (for more privacy). Its great that your hub is good and patient, because that's what you'll need - and lots more foreplay. :]
Here are a couple good sites:
somethingsexyplanet.com
funfactory.de (gotta love German engineering..)
Good luck and happy hunting!

Bless your heart! That is a problem. Are you interested in a natural approach since you can't take estrogen? PLUS from Mannatech is not a hormone, but contains plant sterols that support that endocrine system. It's great for any type of hormonal issue -- and hormones control sleep, mood, energy level, and a host of other things. I don't know for sure that it will help with your problem, but there is a good chance. There is also a possibility that it will help your body use estrogen without an endometriosis flare. Lots of women take PLUS and have help those kinds of problems. By the way, if you can't take estrogen, you are at a real danger for osteoporosis. Did you doctor warn you about that? You need to be taking a calcium supplement that also contains a balance of magnesium so your body can absorb it. Email me back if you would like me to help you with this or to provide more information. You can also check out my Web site at www.susanjordanbrown.com for more information about the company. Hope this helps!

I would research 'bioidentical hormone replacement' and see if you can find out whether this same problem is common with natural forms of estrogen. Artificial hormones and phyto (plant) hormones are not utilized in the same way by the body.
May not work... But it's worth a shot!
You might start here: Dr. John Lee hormones
...Google that.
Should bring up his website.

Blessings,

B., this is my favorite subject to discuss. Over the past 5 years, my success with women who are experiencing these problems is 100%. It is a progesterone creme (no plant estrogen) which will give you vaginal wetness, increase your desire for sexuality, decrease pain from endometrosis, stop the mood swings, migraines, cramping, lack of sleep, increase focus on what you are doing, increase energy, and gets you back to your old self.
Cost is $34.00 - doctors are carrying in their offices as an alternative to drugs. This product changed my life 5 years ago and now I share this with everyone else. It works or you get your money back.
You can call me at ###-###-#### if you have more questions.
Thanks Pamela

B.,

My name is B., too. I'm a mother of five children.
I mainly wanted to comment on your six adopted children.
I commend you for having the courage to bless six children who may otherwise have had a life of foster care and struggles. Your children are a few of the fortunate.
As far as your sensitive challenge, I highly recommend a natural juice called XanGo Juice. It seems to help balance the hormones. I've been drinking it over 4 years and my children are all grown...no challenge with stretching :) You can get this juice on bank ave and main st. in New Iberia.
Good luck,
B.

Hello B., My name is B. also. That's kind of weird. I also had painful intercourse due to chemo induced early menopause. i actually considered divorcing my husband but thanks to my wonderful OB/GYN I went a different route. He gave me some samples of an estrogen cream that I could insert a few times a week to help with the tightness. It has a low dose of estrogen and since it was only in the vaginal area I chose to give it a try. I am a breast cancer survivor and even though my tumors were estrogen/progesterone negative( which means that estrogen did not make my tumors grow)the overall rule for all breast cancer patients is NO estrogen. I actually only used it a few times and it was still uncomfortable but it did help some. Some suggest using various size dildos to help stretch yourself back out. Once you have intercourse enough to stretch a little I think you'll find that you will not have to use anything but lots of lube. We use the WET Intimacy Gel found in the toiletries section at Walmart. It seems to be the best one for us.I also had a problem with lack of desire and no matter how much we tried I couldn't achieve the big O. I still get tender so long drawn out sessions are a no go but I now enjoy our love life once again. My Dr. suggested testosterone shots once a month to help with that and it has definitely done the job in both areas. The one drawback is the hair issue. More and some darker facial hair. Keep a watch on the chin and neck area. My leg hair grows faster but the but the pluses outweigh the minuses for me anyway. Ask around and find a Dr. who is a woman's advocate(my Dr. is a man), someone who is kind and compassionate. They are out there but it may take a little bit of work to find the right Dr. for you. Good Luck, B.

I didn't read all the advice, but I want to second the ones who have said to seek out a physical therapist. I live in the Little Rock area and can recommend a great one who specializes in "pelvic floor" area and helped me get over scar tissue pain from a vaginal tear during delivery. She used the vaginal dilator, Slippery Stuff (same thing as Femglide I think) lubricant, and also gave me a prescription for an estrogen cream to help my scar tissue stretch (not sure if you could use a cream rather than taking orally?). She was great and I'm so glad I went!

Make sure to ask around till you find one in your area. My female gynecologist told me I'd just have to live with it, but later my male OB referred me to the PT clinic. Really made me question my notion that a female gyn is best just because she's female! Good luck!!
