Yeast Infection in 2 Yr Old

My 2 yr old girl has had a bumpy rash on her bottom for several weeks now. It doesn't seem to bother her, and her pediatrician says it is a yeast infection. I've tried OTC creams for it (via dr's advice) but it doesn't seem to be doing much good. How long will it take to go away, and does anyone know of any other methods to help me get rid of it?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for the advice. After someone mentioned "Nystatin Cream," I remembered that I had some left over from dealing with thrush while nursing. The Dr. oked since it hadn't expired, and I used it in combination with the Desitin and feeding yogurt. It only took a few days for it to turn around. We are still letting lots of air get to it, (she's potty training so we go without sometimes) and keeping an eye on it, but I expect it to be gone on a few days. Thanks everyone for the advice... we could've been battling this for a while.

hey!
When my daughter was little she loved to take bubble baths. The doctor informred me that the bubble baths were giving her yest infections. So that may be the problem. Also, scented soaps and scented powders can cause this also. try baths without perfume for a couple of weeks and then if that doesn't help, find another doctor! :)

I am sorry to hear this. My little girl has went through this her whole life. She is potty trained now, and her little bottom is still broke out. Her Dr told me to mix the Nystatin cream with Desitin. If you just put the Nystatin cream by itself, it will get absorbed into the skin, because it will get wiped off by the diaper. If you put it on, then the Desitin, it should seal it in better.

I hope that she gets some relief from it. :)

My daughter also gets yeast infections when she has been on antibiotics. I give her yogurt and get a prescription for Nystala for it. clears up quicker that way.

My daughter had a yeast infection before and the doctor had me buy clotrimazole cream (antifungal cream). You put a little bit on the affected area and then put some vasoline over it. It may take a few days to completely go away, but it works! the doctor had me do this after every diaper change. Hope this helps! :)

I also recommend the yogurt method. It is all natural and it works. I would feed her a good quality yogurt like Stoneyfield farm organic YoBaby. It has more kinds of helpful bacteria than the other brands, and has no artificial ingredients. Feeding some yogurt to you child everyday will be a preventative measure also.

I know it sounds strange, but my son used to get them from the baby wipes I was using! Every time I got near the bottom of the container where the blue "you're running low" indicator line was -- pow --there was the rash again! (only took 2 containers to figure it out!)

When you buy the yogurt, make sure it has active Acidophilus cultures in it.

I was prone to yeast infections, too. Now I watch my acidic intake, including vinegar, pickles, yeasty breads and rolls, AND sugar intake ... etc.

Also, if she's potty trained, stick with 100% cotton panties...no nylon or polyester blends!! **This is all part of the "air" situation. Make sure she's wiping from front to back, too.

That's all I can think of right now, aside from calling her doctor back and getting better advice...or finding a different pediatrician.

My daughter had a yeast infection when she was about 12 months. For 1 whole day we had to let her run around the house w/o a diaper. We used cornstarch and made sure she had things like yogurt w/bacteria cultures to eat. I can't remember what it's called, but you can go to your local CVS Pharmacy and ask the Pharmacist - but we also got these capsules our doctor told us about that you break open and put in their food. It contains another type of bacteria. Her rash went away within a couple of days.

try yogurt. You can use plain yogurt topically, and feed her some flavored stuff. Should work pretty quickly.

Hi, I am very familiar with yeast infections in children. I always used plain yogurt.Yogurt has a natural bacteria in it that fights the yeast. It sounds kinda wierd, but it works. If she still wears a diaper, just lather it all over her infected area. Give her plenty orally as well. This also will work for you as well. Its cheaper, and alot safer than the OTC stuff. If you have any questions about this method feel free to contact me. ____@____.com
Good luck!

Hello the yeast infection that your daughter is experiencing is due to the diapers not absorbing all the urine. Over the counter products do not always work the doctor should have given you a prescription for something called Nystantin cream and you just apply it a few times a day and it should heal right up.

If you are prone to yeast infections and you bathe with your child she could be getting them from you. Just to let you know if you didnt :) But it sounds like shes getting them from the diapers.

Start giving her yogurt. The bacteria in the yogurt kills the yeast and it is good for her. Once or twice a week should help get it under control and keep it that way.

Not sure how long you have been trying the OTC methods. But as a person that works in the medical field I would recommend that if you have been using OTC for more than 7-10 days contacting your physician and explaining to them that the OTC meds are not working. You may need a prescription to clear it up. I know on some of the OTC meds you are recommended not to use it for more than 7 days. You might also want to try browning some flour in a frying pan and putting it on the rash. I did that with my children when they were babies b/c their skin was so sensitive to things as babies. I hope that I have been of some help. If you have any more questions feel free to contact me. ____@____.com....

First I would get her off of processed foods, only alkaline whole foods for a while. this means nothing acidic, you can probably go online and find a list of foods in this category. Those over the counter medications are probably not strong enough to take care of this, and she might need to be on antibiotics. I would definitely take her back to the doctor. Plus if he does put her on antibiotics you will want to get her on acidophilis to help the good bacteria grow while the antibiotic is killing the bad stuff. Also plenty of water and non sugary drinks will help flush it from her system. A yeast infection in a child is not uncommon, but you do want to treat it right away and then take precautions to not allow it to come back.

My 2 year old daughter has a rash that sounds similar. I wonder if it is also a yeast infection; she is still in pull-ups so I thought it was a diaper rash, but it is persistent. I could also use some advice as to what creams or other things would work to cure it.

Our pediatrician once told me to put anti-fungal cream on my son when he had a yeast-like rash on his bottom. I just bought the generic from Family Dollar and it worked amazingly! It actually is good on most rashes, I'd just be extra cautious with anything around the face. GOOD LUCK!

I once had a yeast infection that after two diflucan it never went away. I saw my gyno and he used something called genteen violet on me, it's over the counter and turns your skin purple(hence the violet). It cleared up over night. He also told me that it was an old remedy that they used in babies mouths when they had thrush so I know it's safe for a bottom. I also used it on my baby son when he had gotten a yeast infection and it works very well.

They should have given you prescription Nystatin cream for it, and you should notice an improvement after a couple applications. However, if this isn't the route the doc wants to take, then keep her clean and dry, let her "air out" without a diaper if she is still in them, for as long and as often as you can. Also, yogurt does help if you get the kind with live and active cultures, it will say that on the container. Danimals and Gogurt are my sons favorite.
Hope this helps!

Both my children were prone to yeast infections. I asked doctors, friends etc... I tried tons of OTC creams, lotions, wipes and so on, but nothing i tried seemed to clear it up.
I did a bunch of research to find something "different" that might help.
I found that avoiding the creams and letting their little bottoms "breath" without a diaper (occasionally) really helped. Yeast "grows", like bacteria do, in the warm moist areas of the body. Of course bathing is a great way to flush away any build-up of bacteria on the skin but it is what takes place after the bath that really counts. I found that if I dried my little ones off and then went to apply the creams, it never seemed to clear up, but if i dried thier bodies and allowed a bit of "fresh air" to the area the infection didn't seem to last as long.
I also insisted on pushing the water issue as a way to "flush" the toxins from their little bodies. I also had to monitor their intake of "yeast containing foods" like milk, cheese etc...
I hope this helps a little. Best of luck
