Hi there,

My Mother in Law needs to be moved down here to texas. Currently she is in Oklahoma and is not getting the care she needs.
We live in Texas and we are the only family that can help her. We want to move her into a nursing home that is closer to us.
She is supported on Medicare and Medicaid alone. She has Multiple Sclerosis and keeps getting sicker and sicker and no one is giving her the care she needs in the small town in oklahoma.

My Fiance hasn't tried moving her down here because he says her medicare and medicaid won't transfer. Hes not sure.
We need to get her moved down here as soon as possible. She was put back in the hospital again and we are terrified we are going to loose her if we can't get her the care she needs.

What do we need to do to transfer the paperwork? How long will it take? What are our options?

Thanks

Contact a social worker at the hospital she is currently in.
I work at a hospital and have worked at a skilled nursing facility. There are people who can help you understand how things work and help you fascilitate things.
I wish you the best as these things can be so difficult when you are far away from loved ones, but things can be worked out.
You need advice from someone who has more information about your mother in law's specific situation.
I wish you the very best.

Medicare and Medicaid are Federal programs...I don't see why they wouldn't apply in Texas the same as Oklahoma.
Have your fiance talk to a hospital social worker for guidance.
Good luck.

I am a former Medicaid Social Worker and I am sorry to say that no, the Medicaid will not transfer. You will have to re apply in TX. Medicaid is actually a state program and each state has different guidelines to qualify. The Social Worker at the hospital can help you get her a bed in TX and qualify. It's just a matter of paper work-I'm sure she will requalify. The will help you coordinate so that there is no lapse in coverage(very important). Her Medicare does infact transfer as that is a federal program. Good luck.

You should contact Medicaid in Texas. They should know how all that would work.

Typically, if approved it is retro active so if she moved today and you did her paperwork say next week, it should cover any expenses during that time but you should check with the Medicaid office to insure you have everything in place.

Medicare is a federal program and will transfer from state to state. but Medicaid is a state program and the qualifications can differ from state to state, so you will have to reapply. Ask the social worker at her current home what the process is. Take notes and document your conversation. Then call Texas Medicaid and ask them the process. Take notes, document (name of person, title, location). Also, call a nursing home that accepts Medicaid and ask them the process. Based on what you hear, you may need to ask more questions, but start now so you can get this resolved and get her closer to you.

Do you have a home to move her to? We had trouble finding a medicaid bed in texas. Also, you should check in Texas. I heard differert states have different income requirements.
