For a babysitter, I actually went to the local high school and walked into the guidance counselor's office and asked if they could recommend any junior or seniors who were responsible and did babysitting. What luck, there was a girl right there in the office and I had 3 guidance counselors vouch for her. She's great. This was how I used to get my references when I was a teenager for work. The guidance counselors always know who are the responsible good kids who might need a few extra dollars from babysitting.

I found my occasional babysitter through church. What do you mean by "childcare"? All day? Date night?

I usually start by asking my coworkers who keeps thier kids. I prefer personal recommendations.

My 2 current babysitters were found on Sitter City and are PHENOMENAL! One is a medically retired police officer and mother, the other is a former elementary school teacher.

I have found mediocre sitters on there as well, but I think it was my own fault for not being more descriminating during the hiring process. You do have to pay a fee to use it, but I think it is WELL worth the expense.

I am a provider in MN and do the referrals for my association. I give our states Resource and Referral agency to parents in addition to any names I can offer thru our group.

Usually the Resource and Referral agency for your state is where you should begin. In my state it is a valuable resource for parents and providers alike. It will have a rate survey showing the average rates for different types of care (home, center, etc) and diff ages, etc. ALot of articles and information for resources for subsidy care, etc. Tons of info.

Not all states have the same info on theirs...but here is the Parents tab from the New Jersey one....explore the site...you may find other info you can use.....

Hi A.,

First determine exactly what you're looking for. Do you want a child care provider to watch your child in their home? Do you want a nanny in your home? Do you want a live in nanny or an au pair to live in and bring another country's culture into your child's life? All are great options, but once you decide what you want, you can focus on finding the best person for your little ones. Word of mouth (ask your friends!), Resource and Referral agencies, and even Craigslist can help you find the right fit.

I now help families all across the country who are interested in a childcare and cultural exchange program that offers them flexible, live-in childcare with a unique international perspective. If that's something you may be interested in, feel free to contact me.

I hope you find the perfect fit for your family! Best wishes to you.
