We are a little bored with our current Tivo selections for the nightly wind-down. Any favorite TV programs that promote words, spelling, discovery or the like?

We, too, watch a lot of PBS Kids. My son also likes Dora & Diego. But all those shows are only on in the mornings. As for any nightly TV watching, it's either America's Funniest Home Videos (not really educational) or we put in a video that IS educational. He likes the Leapfrog videos "Talking Words Factory" and "Math Circus".

For educational shows, you can't go wrong with PBS. Super Why, Word World, Martha Speaks are all focused on letters, spelling and vocabulary. Curious George and Sid the Science Kid are excellent for learning simple real life science lessons, many of which you can duplicate at home. Caillou, Dragon Tales, Clifford are great for helping kids learn how to handle everyday life situations (being a good friend, being nervous, being scared, etc). And no commercials! I can't say enough good things about PBS!

I like Super Why on PBS. It incorporates vocabulary, letter recognition, word recognition, problem solving, and nursery rhymes. I didn't think my daughter would like it, but she does. Her favorite, though, is Martha Speaks which does a lot with vocabulary but she likes it for the dog. :) Sesame Street is always good, too.

My 4 1/2 year old daughter loves Phineas and Ferb on Disney or Disney XD. I also enjoy this show as well. It's about 2 stepbrothers who invent things everyday during their summer vacation. She also enjoys PBS Kids Sprout- Curious George, Berenstein Bears and Dragon Tales. Noggin is also a great channel and Taylor enjoys watching The Backyardigans, Jack's Big Music Show & Little Bill.

Thank God I'm not the only one who uses Tivo for the nightly wind down! We like Max and Ruby (PBS) - it's not very educational, but it's very calming, and I have a friend whose kids love Little Einstiens on Disney - very cute show, good for world discovery.

Shows that I think are great are on ION T.V. 1 PM -2PM each day Veggie Tales, Babar, Joesph 2 - 2, 3-2-1 Penguins, Jane and the Dragon. Do not know when it would be on in Northbrook just look for ION T.V.
You can view these shows on Saturday mornings on NBC.
I still love the good PBS shows. When my son was young he watched shows Arthur, Curious George and Mister Rogers Neighborhood. He also love Puzzle Place but I think that has been taken off. But I do not think you can go wrong with PBS.
He also liked this Science show, Beakman's World. http://www.beakmansworldtv.com/ He said he saw it on TV not to long ago but it was on the Spanish Channel. He understood the show because he had seen it before.
So there are some good show out there to watch.

Another vote for PBS kids. Check out their website www.pbskids.org. Most of the programming out there for kids is junk but they have some decent offerings. My 3yo loves Word World and Word Girl. Martha Speaks is cute too for building vocabulary.

I just had to smile when I saw Dinosaur Train as a suggestion. It's a new program on PBS and even *I* like it! I also enjoy Super Why and Sid the Science Kid (I'm sorta partial to the nerdy learning shows and supporting public television).

My 5 year old is very into Dinosaur Train right now. She also likes Super Why, Sid the Science Kid, and Martha Speaks. She seems to be mostly done with Noggin, but I think it's just because she's seen all the episodes so many times. She still likes Max and Ruby somewhat. Good luck!
