I have a friend who is creating a website for my new charitable type ministry of sorts. Upon completetion It will have advertising on it and the ability to accept credit card payments. I have never had a website entailing this much work and have no idea whatsoever what is a customary fee to expect to pay him. He and I have been working on this off/on for the past year. I would love to have this up and running by Fall.
We have not discussed (regretably) payment and I have no idea what would be reasonable and customary for this type of service.
How long should I expect something like this to take from start to finsih?

I am also looking for direction on having an artist or other design a logo for me. Has anyone done this? Who would I contact for this and how much should I expect to pay?

Thanks mamas!

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your great information and advice! I knew I could count on you all to give it to me straight!
I am going to ask him what he is expecting for compensation. Since he has never brought it up I really don't think he is expecting much however I don't want any surprises and I truly want to compensate him for his work on this. With all your wonderful responses I have somewhat of an idea and feel more comfortable about moving forward. I can't wait to get the site published!

Ask him what he wants to be paid for this. If he's been doing this for a year and hasn't brought it up, it may mean that he isn't concerned about getting paid much for this work, but you won't know until you ask. Some developers like to do volunteer work to beef up their resume.

If you are 501c3, he may prefer the tax write-off for donating his services. Talk to him about it. There's really no other way to make sure he's compensated appropriately.

He's a friend.
Working on it for the past year.
It is for a charitable organization.
Ask him, how you can compensate him.

He probably has his own rates.
But since you are his friend and this is for a charity, he may or may not accept any money.
Up to him.
Just ask him.
But 1 year working on it off and on, is a lot of time.
Website Developers, do a lot.
It is not a template.

For having an artist or logo... he will then have to integrate that into the website, too.
Ask this person, how much?
And check online for what is the going rates in your area.
Or, your friend, may know of someone who can do that.
Tech people are very networked into this realm and often know people who do graphics for websites.

You really should talk about this now so you are not surprised about it later. It is very very expensive to have a professional website going (especially if he is going to host it and maintain the site... it is an ongoing process). $3,000-$7,000 is probably an average ball part range, depending on what was actually done, etc. Then, there is often a monthly fee to maintain the site, of maybe $100/month or so.

Being in the business of creating web sites my self the cost varies. It can cost as little as a few hundred dollars (with say 1 page and a basic site) to as much as 10-15 thousand (with many pages shopping carts flash ect). We go by a fixed rate for simple web sites and a hourly rate for complex web sites. The length of time it takes to create a site depends on what kind of template/design software you are using. The credit card thing can be as easy as using a pay pal button and taking pay pal payments. Pay pal is by far one of the most secure ways of doing online payments. there are also several options with different companies to accept credit cards. the main thing is to make sure the security on the transactions is the absolute best!

Hi D.

My husband just had his website completed by a friend also. She does this as a profession and she charged him $400.00. Not sure if that was a great friend price but we thought it sounded like a fair price. His logo is actually from his business cards which she was able to transfer over from that print shop that my husband uses for all of his advertising.

I think the website turned out great. She still has a few things to add but it took her about 2 weeks to complete. You can check it out at www.FarrellPlumbing.com

Good Luck

We run a professional web agency - our professional rates for a website start at $7000. A logo starts at $2500. There is a lot of work that goes into designing and developing a professional website, especially if you have extra features like ecommerce (selling things on-line), to make sure it is done properly. As far as a freelance rate goes - anything goes, and should be something you discuss with your friend. Good luck!
