My son is in Karate and I was just wondering if anyone could give me any ideas about what to buy his Sensei for Christmas.

What can I do next?

Take a look at this site. There are gift "collections" of all price ranges, and themes. Your son's Sensei will be able to choose what gift he wants and never know what you spent (like a gift card). My family gets these often, and they really love them.

All 3 of my children take Karate and have been for many many years! I always give our sensei a homemade fudge and I also make this great chocolate covered popcorn. He says he enjoys it!

J., Teresa R.'s suggestion is absolutely stellar! Nothing means more to a teacher than knowing he or she has made a difference in the life of a student. Having your son write his short letter of appreciation and turning into w photo quality plaque with his picture on it will mean more to his Sensei than any number of gifts that will be used up and discarded or stacked in the attic until they rot. This is something that is not only personal, but it is personal for both the giver and the reciptient. And it is something that will be important to Sensei for the rest of his or her life... the knowledge that he or she made a difference... and the student appreciated the effort.

You might consider a Spa Finder Gift card. It may sound crazy, but I know many men who love to have massages and some even enjoy pedicures! Pedicures are really excellent for foot care and he should appreciate nice feet if he is a Sensei. He is baring his feet to the world!
You can find those gift cards where they sell gift cards. Try drug stores of major grocery stores.

I studied martial arts for 10yrs. I also taught it for 6. I would have to say that the most meaningful gifts were from the children.

Here is my suggestion. You son is old enough to write. So, why not have him write a thank you letter to his Sensei telling him how Karate and his Sensei in particular has helped him or changed him for the better. You could scan it or even take it to Fedex (or go to snapfish or kodak) and have them do a layout with your son's picture (or picture of Sensei and your son) and his hanwritten thank you! If you feel you want to include a gift card that would be nice too (I personally like Starbucks). But, speaking from experience, that personal thank you would be more than enough.
