I want to try and get my 4 year old off of cow's milk. What do you drink milk-wise that's still yummy? Is almond milk good?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I bought some almond milk and some organic cereal tonight and she didn't tell the difference. :) I told her that I bought her some "special milk" and she ate it up!

I looked up almond milk on ehow.com and it is an ok substitute, but you shouldn't have a lot of it because it has chemicals in it that can affect the thyroid and make it grow larger. It also has a lot more sugar (added by makers). I am having a hard time trying to find a nondairy milk too. Luckily my little guy likes goat milk, so we give him that. I would look up some reviews if I were you.

My whole family has their own prefrences so when you open my fridge, it's an interesting sight, LOL!! Here is our breakdown:

Dad: Almond milk (original or vanilla) only
Mom (me): Almond milk (original only) or Hemp Milk (original only)
8yo: Hemp Milk (oringinal only)
6yo: So Delicious Coconut Milk (the red carton in the refrigerated section) or Oat Milk.
3yo: So Delicious Coconut Milk (the red cartion in the refrigerated section) only.

Sometimes I think it would be easier if we all drank the same thing but then again, I'm just stoked we are all off cows milk:)

Unsweetened vanilla almond milk is good. Cocunut milk is good too. I would not switch to soy.

Soy milk tastes good, but before offering that to your child I would research it. From my research I have eliminated ALL soy out of my diet (beware - its hidden everywhere!)

Almond milk is ok, but I think its best if you make it yourself. Its super easy to make and you can soak the nuts before to make it easily digestible. I add some vanilla and dates if I want a sweeter flavor. You do need a good blender to make nut milks.

For my family we choose raw cows milk. Its not for everyone, but the benefits are great. There are also some options out there for low heat pasteurization (still within the government requirements) and non homogenized (the fat separates from the milk). And as one other person mentioned, goats milk also is a good option. Though from my research its pretty expensive.

I haven't looked into coconut or hemp, but from what I know I would choose those over soy.

don't care for soy. i like coconut and almond. hemp and flax both have even more health benefits. i don't care for the unflavored versions of them, though. the flavored ones are probably fine.

Almond and Soy are both good.
Kids usually love the vanilla flavored and the chocolate.
I use straight, it's perfect for my smoothies.

we just switched to Silk. My 7 and 6yr olds like the chocolate and very vanilla flavors. Took a few days getting used to it, but it was a pretty smooth transition.

I would use almond or rice milk. I stay away from soy because it affects estrogen levels. My daughter likes the almond milk but not the rice.
