It's embarrasing to describe, but here goes. I had my daughter 19 months ago. I was surprised to feel a bad stinging or burning sensations on the very edge of the skin when I was streaching for her to come out. I read somewhere once that I can rub some sort of oil and it will aid in stretching. I can't remember what it is.
I will be having another baby any day now. her due date is Sunday. Any suggestions?
olive oil, almond oil, vit E oil, any clean oil. I'd stay away from veg & baby oil though??
Also I believe it may help to drink lots of water so you're hydrated.
I still tore some but not terribly so, I dont think?? Healed fairly fast afterwards.
Any natural oil should do the trick. YOu can also steach the skin out a little bit too. You get a little oil and put it on two fingers and around the vagianl opening. should your finger and push down about 1 inch inside the vagina. Push down until you start to feel the stinging and hold for as long as you can stand. I did this about 5 times a day for 2 weeks befor my son was born and i did not tear at all. OLIVE OIL!!!! I sware by it. I have birthed four children naturally without a tear, and my husband massaged my perenium with olive oil each time while I was pushing.
Do a google search for "perineal massage", there are a lot of good tutorials but they suggest starting 6 weeks before the baby is due. They suggest "lubricant's such as KY jelly, cocoa butter, olive oil, vitamin E oil or pure vegetable oil". This was suggested to me during my child birth classes i took before i had my son and of course i did not even try it, the stretching burned like fire and i ended up with an episiotomy. I also didn't do it before my daughter was born but only ended up with a small tear due to her coming out so fast. The burn might not be so bad this time since you just had your last baby 1 1/2 years ago.
The doctor during the delivery of my daughter applied oil and massaged the area, but I don't know what kind of oil it was. I also had the stinging and told her I felt like I was going to tear, which she said was the 'ring of fire', but I ended up tearing terribly anyway. I can only imagine, though, what it would have been like without the oil.
I would call your doctor's office or the L&D area of the hospital where you're going to deliver and ask if the oil is an option and if they provide it or what they would suggest.

I don't know the NAME of the oil, but my daughter had MIDWIFE for the birth of my granddaughter, and they used oil -repeatedly-to help ease the stretching. The midwives work out of Fremont Hosp. in Yuba City (New Beginnings). Call them and chat them up. I was very impressed that my daughter did not tear or need episiotomy! I myself tore on two (quite badly the last baby) and had episiotomy with one. I begged the doc not to let me tear the last time, to do episiotomy! but baby came too fast. My logic being that a straight cut line is surely easier to stitch up than jagged tear.
After watching my daughter deliver my granddaughter, I wished I had been able to have midwives; they stay with you
the entire end of the delivery, keep oiling perineum, calm, lika another mom. very different than doctor, who comes in, reams ya, leaves. I doubt doctor would ever use the oils is what I am saying.

Hi T.- I had a home birth and my midwife used olive oil. I tore a little but am sure the oil/massaging helped as it wasn't bad. Not sure if they'll let you use it in the hospital. Good Luck and congratulations!

I had my 9lb 4oz daughter naturally 19 months ago. My midwife put oil on me throughout the pushing process and I could feel it helping. Unfortunately I don't know what type of oil she used but I'm sure any doula or midwife would have some recommendations.

Tearing or needing an episiotomy was the thing I feared the most during my first pregnancy. I was terrified.
I'm pretty small so they didn't really know if I'd be able to do it without a C-section.
I was in the hospital, but had her completely naturally. No drugs, etc.
After she came out and they said "It's a Girl!", I said, "Aren't you going to cut me?"
I didn't even need a stitch. I was in shock. I was happy, but the thing I feard most didn't happen.
Zip 10 years later....my son was big for me. 7lbs 4oz. My doctor diligenty used some kind of oil on me during the birthing. I have no idea what it was, but I didn't tear at all. I needed plenty of ice packs, but no stitches or anything.
It shouldn't be too hard to find out what type of oil it is and request ahead of time that it will be used during the birth. If you can't get your doctor on a Saturday, call the OB department of the hospital you will go to and ask them about it.
