Hello My name is A.. I am a new mother of a precious baby boy who is only 5 wks old. I was curious of what is a normal sleep pattern for a baby my son's age. I've read many different articles of what is normal, but they all seem to be conflicting. My son sleep anywhere from 3-4 hours at a time. Does it get any better then this??

What can I do next?

Yes one day he will sleep through the night and you'll be able to put a sticker in his baby book! SLEPT THROUGH THE NIGHT sticker. I was so happy.

Your baby is fine. He sleeps as much as he needs. All babies are different and unique so there's no such thing as "normal." It will get better as he gets older. However, when my son was born, he woke up ever 2-3 hours at night and didn't sleep through the night until he was almost 2. Then he started the night terrors, nightmares where he'd scream out, I'd come running thinking he was being murdered only to find him sound asleep. When my oldest daughter was born, she began sleeping through the night at 3 months old, BUT she gave up naps at 18 months old. My 3rd baby slept almost all night when she turned 3 months. Teething would wake her occasionally. She is 22 months now, sleeps all night unless she has a nightmare and takes good naps. Your baby is doing what works for him, even if it doesn't work for you, <grin>. As always, if you are concerned with anything about him, talk to your Pedi.

God Bless,

Chris H.

Yes! It's completely normal....what the articles don't tell you is that every baby is different. You're doing fine! Just remember that this is the hardest it will ever be and it DOES get better! Sleep when he sleeps, even when you think you can't and make sure you eat healthy foods too. Hang in there!

hi A.,
nothing should be considered normal when it comes to sleep patterns of a baby, they are all different. my daughters been sleeping 10 hours a night and awake all day(no naps at all) since she was 6 months. before that her sleep patterns sound just like your son's do. As long as he seems to get enough sleep you shouldn't worry.
