What Is a Good Washing Machine?

Hi!
Our washing machine is on it's last leg. We just had an inspection/tune up of our current washing machine and the guy said it's on it's last leg... soon. It's 20 years old, which we got from my parents. It has lasted a LONG time! It's a Maytag, and we never had any problems with it! But, in view of it's prognosis, I am trying to research what brands are good, and what models, etc. So that when the washing machine does go kaput, I will know what to buy.

There are top-loading and front-loading nowadays. So confusing! I guess front-loading is best for heavier loads and it's high-efficiency operating nowadays. I am clueless.

Anyway, if any of you have a great washing machine that is good and you love, please make suggestions!

No high-end priced models though... that would not work with our budget. We're looking for medium to lower priced, but good models/brands.

Thank you!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

THANK YOU all for your suggestions! Yes, I agree... Whirlpool seems to be the best
and most widely chosen washer/appliance, and well rated. From what our repair man told us, "Maytag" is now
"Whirlpool".. they bought the brand or something and they are pretty much the same.
Anyway, I appreciate all your help with this, since this is a major household purchase.
You Moms are the best!

LOVE my front loader. I think it was a Whirpool 4 yrs old? from Sears? Can't remember.

The only thing with them is that you have to leave them open, because otherwise mold will built up inside. So it's no biggie for me.

My friend noticed that her clothes were cleaner and softer b/c of less soap residue. These machines simply don't need that much soap. It's TRUE.

Not having to use so much water is a plus too.

In college my husband worked for Sears in the appliance & delivery department. He has said that the best appliances are the whirlpool. I love my whirlpool washer & dryer. They were very reasonable, about $350 - $400 each I believe. Whichever you do choose, I highly suggest that you get one with a steel drum. They do a great job & will last a lot longer. I know that Costco has some similar to the ones I chose. Best!

Hi!
3 years ago we replaced a 20+ yr old Whirlpool old top loader with a new Whirlpool Duet HE front loader, got it on sale for about $800-900, I know still a little high....but we love it!!! We use less water, less detergent, it's quiet and the clothes come out so much cleaner. Good luck to you! Happy hunting.

Oh we also splurged on a new dryer too...love that too.

We have a washer called Cabrio that is a whirlpool brand. We bought it at Sears and it was very reasonably priced. It works wonderfully. It is a top loader and comes with a clear instruction manual.

From experience---- whatever you do...DON'T BUY FRIGIDAIRE. HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE!! If I see another repair man for one of my lovely appliances I'm going to scream.

I had good luck with Maytag before.

Good luck!

Hello! We bought our front loader washer and dryer from costco - so very cost effective! I think they are maytag as well. We have had them for 3 years and we just love them.
