What Foods Will Make Soft Stools Not So Soft in Children?

If you have any good suggestions... I want my 5 1/2 year old to learn to wipe himself, especially since he will be in Kindergarten in the fall. He doesn't want to and I don't blame him... he always has such messy bowel movements (right now I would rather clean him than have him do a bad job and get dirty). Are there foods that would help. We eat a healthy, well balanced diet, which includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

Thanks for your help!

Cheese is a good way to solidify poopies, however also just using the flushable wipes will help him too as they did wonders with my daughter. My son this summer is going to be learning to wipe himself and his poops are different each day so I am going to do the same method I did with my daughter. The wet wipes help get them clean and if you don't want to flush them you can just throw them away.

Hi T.,
We are a vegetarian family, so first off I would say do not compromise on your commitment to eat well. I believe there is no more important thing than a healthy body. That said I have learned over the years things that trigger this issue in myself and in my children. Try limiting the amount of fruit for a week, especially juices. Just increase veggies and water and milk. The natural sugars in fruit can be irritating on the bowels for some. Oatmeal and soy based products can also cause soft stools for some. So, if it isn't the fruits try those things next. Just target one or two things a week until you find what is causing this for him. My bet is the fruit. Good luck to you. Congrats on choosing a healthy lifestyle for your little ones!!!
Have a great day,
B.

foods that bind include bananas, rice, bread and other starchy foods. Obviously it's a little deviation from your current well balanced whole grain diet...good luck. When my oldest was in kindergarten he was barely 5 and could not wipe for the same reason but I knew that his body cycle was such that he always went #2 when he was home in the evening so it wasn't an issue and now he's 7 and he can do it on his own. Hope that this helps a little, good luck.

Hi T.
When my daughter gets the really wet and messy stool, I get this probiotic (acidolfulis) its an enzyme so it won't hurt him to have one daily. Then instead of milk i give her rice milk and in 2 days shes normal. I hope this helps and gl

Maybe your well balanced diet is a little too much for his little belly. Some kids just can't tolerate the healthy things in life. 20 years ago I was a nanny for three children (6, 4 and 2). The two year old would get the runs every time he ate corn, but his parents insisted on their healthy diet and the poor kid suffered every time. His #2 came out as dirty water with big chunks of corn and was usually enough to cause him to get stripped and into the bathtub.

We all like our children to eat healthy but sometimes we overdo it. I have at times and learned that the kids will stay healthy even if we cut down on some of the fruit, veggies and grains. Somehow kids are fit with this "magic" protection that we don't have as we grow older. Just think about how fast the skin heals on a child and the same cut, scrape or bruise takes so much longer on an adult. Good Luck with your "mess". I hope you can find a solution.
