Weird Cycle (TMI)

A friend of mine is scared that something is really wrong with her. She has had strange periods over the last several years, and is having more problems now. She is planning to make an appointment with a gynecologist, but they told her she has to wait until her bleeding stops for them to do an exam, so she's waiting.

I'm going to try to explain what she has shared with me. Does anyone know what these symptoms could mean? I'm hoping I can get her some answers that might calm her down.

She has always had irregular periods. She would go for 3 or 4 years without one. Recently when she started losing weight, her period started coming back about every couple of months.

It started 2 and a half weeks ago & seemed normal, but it is STILL going. It will stop for about 12 hours, then come back really heavy & make her feel light headed.

She has been on the pill before, but not for a long time now. Her whole family has female issues (I am not sure what they are exactly). She has been checked before for things and exams have always been clear.

She is 27 years old, no kids.

Does anybody know what could cause this? Could it just be stress & recent weight loss (she is overweight) that is causing her cycle to change & it just needs to stable out?

Thanks for any suggestions. I hope she can get to the doctor soon & know for sure, but I want to try to calm her down.

What can I do next?

being very overweight will stop the menstral cycle. I do not know why this was not addressed with her doctor before. I think that now that she has lost weight that now her menstral cycle has resumed. It is not good that her period is still going on. she definantly needs to go to the doctor. being very overweight can also effect her fertility and having children. being on the pill previously should not effect her menstral cycle now. tell her to calm down because being stressed is only going to stress her body more and make her bleed more. I hope everything turns out ok.

hmmmm....it sort of sounds like she might have polycystic ovary disease perhaps. Classic signs of it....but it also mimics other things so she is best to go to an OB. Did she explain to them how long she has been bleeding? I know they don't like to see you as long as you are bleeding but if its been going on for quite some time then the doctor will usually want to see you. Have her call back and let them know how "long" she has been bleeding. They might think she is just having a regular period. Is she in pain? Poor girl. My cousin has the p.o.d. and when she had alot of the weight on her -she wouldn't have "regular" periods at all. The doc wanted to put her on birth control to "regulate" it but for whatever reasons she decided not to. She did and was able to get pregnant with the help of clomid. However her son is now 10 years old and she has never ever once had a pregnancy scare since because of the disease. If she wants to get pregnant again she will have to go through fertitlity help again most likely. When she lost her weight the periods would come back and they would last for weeks. Does she have a hairy chin or dark hair around her belly button? Those are classic signs as well but also very embarrassing too so she may not be forthcoming with that info.
She needs to make sure she is eating a well balanced meal(s) and drinking plenty of water right now-might be the reason she feels lightheaded. I know when I bled for 6 weeks straight because of a birth control that I eventually got off of-it drained me to no end. I don't recall getting lightheaded but if she is dehydrated and not eating right combined with all the bleeding involved it could be it. I am by no means a doctor and I think she needs to at least call the ob back and let them know just how long she has been bleeding this time around and let them know how she is feeling to see if that changes anything. Sometimes with OB offices especially you have to get a little demanding but if you don't take charge of your health no one else will. I had a girlfriend/old co-worker that called her ob office time and time again with her bleeding every single time after intercourse and they kept telling her the same thing until one day she got really sick of it all and demanded to be seen. As it turned out for her she had cervical cancer. This supposedly went on for months and should have been seen and treated for this immediately but because the office kept pushing her off this went on for months. She is okay now from what I understand (in remission) but she probably had to go through alot more than what she "would have" had to go through had they caught it earlier maybe. Again I'm not a doctor -take charge of your own health because if you don't then no one else will. This is the day and time we live in-everyone is just "too" busy. If she can't get in there -I would look into another OB office that is more interested in her health and her best interest.

the change in weight will cause her periods to come back. I am not sure why they cant do the exam while she is menstrating. If she is feeling lightheaded it could be Menorrhagia. A friend of mine from church had that and would have to be admitted to the hospital for blood transfusions a few times. they ended up having to do a hysterectomy on her. I would tell her to really make sure she gets into the doctor ASAP, even the ER if she if feeling lightheaded!!!

Hormone imbalance for sure!

My 6 sisters and I all have had these issues and have been able to correct it safely and naturally without surgery.

Email me or have her email me if she would like to talk about it.

Sounds juslt like me. I have polycystic ovaries and I was lucky to have 1-2 periods per year. Once I started to lose weight, the periods became more frequent. In the last year the cycles started to get really heavy so I got on the pill. She needs to make sure she has a good gynecologist because they need to do lab work to confirm PCO syndrome as well as get her on medication. Left untreated (for many years) it can lead to diabetes all the way to uterine cancer. PCO is becoming increasingly common.
