Wearing a Hair Piece

I just came back from a hair cut and of course hate the way nothing ever seems to make my hair look attractive anymore. I have very fine, thin hair with some noticeable hair loss areas that have come due to genetics and aging as well as hormonal changes. Everyday I consider resulting to wearing a hair piece - I think why struggle with daily bad hair days when perhaps this would be the solution. I know a quality piece is very expensive and wonder if it would be worth the investment. Any thoughts? Does anyone wear one due to this reason? It is next to impossible to do anything really great with my hair anymore due to lack of it. Also, my thyroid is fine - so don't need to get it checked again - this is just how my family runs in the hair dept. TY

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the support Moms. I was hoping that someone who wears pieces might respond and tell me the pros or cons of going that route. But I guess we don't have many, if any, Moms in that category.

My best friend's mother in law wears a wig for that reason. HAs for years. I never had a clue!!!

My mom wore one due to chemo that she ordered through the American Cancer Society. MUCH more reasonable prices than the wig store she went to, looked great, and she got more compliments on her wig than she ever got for her real hair!

I DO know they get hot, though. something to consider, especially in the summer. My aunt had one last summer (also due to chemo) and would just whip it off once in a while because she was just too darn hot! I LOVE that she was confident enough to do that BTW :)

No, but I have pictures of family from the 60s where everyone was sporting a wig. They were complicated chignons and beehives like you see on madmen.

Religious jewish women here in NYC do it all the time. They have very convincing hair pieces. Afr. American women sport wigs and weaves too.

I say go for it.
good luck to you and yours,

I say do whatever will make you feel good!! If you do invest in a hair piece, wig or whatever, PLEASE invest enough that you get one that looks real!! My idiot brother-in-law has had wigs and hairpieces forever (he thinks we don't know or something, I'm not sure) but the one he has right now is so disgusting looking - it's all matted around the edges and looks more like a dead animal sitting on his head than a hair piece; and I think something may be living in there, I'm not sure!!

Go for it and good luck!!

I have no experience with hair pieces, mom, but my mother used to wear one. It wasn't a true wig - it just added onto the top of her hair and and came down through the rest of her hair. She didn't mind it, I think, because it didn't squeeze her head like a regular wig. After she decided to go completely gray, she didn't wear it anymore because it was black LOL!

If you do get one, don't make it so VERY different from what your hair really is. My mom's just made her look like she took a lot of time to fix her hair - not like she was wearing a wig.

Years and years ago, when wigs and hair pieces were the vogue, I wore both. I also have fine hair and had difficulty getting the hair piece pinned securely down. I ended up not using after a couple of tries. A friend, who had more hair, always looked good using a chignon style hair piece.

If there is a place that can make the piece to more closely match your hair than the OTC ones from the 60's and that could help you find a way to keep it in place, I would try it again.

I've considered trying a wig again but remember how hot and uncomfortable they were. My hair is now thin and I'm beginning to have male pattern baldness. Genetics for me too.

Why not. They have so many clip in styles that you can put them in when you feel like and then take them out. You can get them made of real hair for like $100. Not sure what skin color you have but I saw this piece on the today show where a man and woman (both light skinned) got tattooing where their hair was thinning to make the scalp look darker. It was AMAZING!!

My aunt always wore wigs and they looked really good - you wouldn't know if you didn't know. On that note, I was watching Joan Rivers on that new reality show that she does with her daughter and she wears those clip in hair pieces and you wouldn't know she had them on because her hair always looks full and great but on this particular episode, she started taking them out of her hair and I was pretty amazed because there's no way you could tell. I would try it definitely - I'm for anything that makes you feel better about yourself. Best of luck to you.

I would assume that your hair might be too thin to attach a piece. Also, you don't want to do anything that will damage what you've got. Maybe cut it short and sport a wig when you want something different?
