I'm hoping to get some advice for my boyfriend. He hasn't been feeling well so he went to the dr about 2wks ago. They said his blood pressure was high (150 / 110) so they put him on medicine for that, they did blood work and his cholesterol was a little high (211) and his triglycerides were really high (340). He started taking fish oil pills about a month ago so they told him to continue taking those along with the blood pressure medicine. He has since starting taking magnesium (he heard from someone that it has a lot of health benefits), vitamin E and St Johns Worth (suggestion from his Mom). Anyway, he seems to be feeling worse. He's had no energy and said he feels sluggish all the time. He normally gets up around 6am to work out in the morning and he hasn't even done that because he said he doesn't feel like getting out of bed.
So, my question is...could all this medicine make him feel worse? I tried to look to see if anything he is taking could be a bad combo with one of the other things he is taking but couldn't find much. Needless to say, I've been really worried about him. He's only 39 and has always been in pretty good shape so this is definately not normal for him.
Thanks in advance!

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone..he called the dr and they told him to stop everything but the blood pressure medicine and he's scheduled for a stress test on friday so hopefully everything will be OK. I will definately look into the Juice plus and other things that were mentioned.

He should not be taking supplements unless a medical professional, who knows his health history and recent problems, instructs him to do so. Stop the magnesium, vitamin E, and St. John's Wort - is his mom and the "someone he heard from" a doctor or other medical professional?

If you don't fancy western medicine that's fine but don't start popping every homeopathic pill just because someone said it was good. Get advice from a nutritionist, doctor, nurse, dietitian, etc. The blood pressure medication is probably the most important medicine he is taking and you do not want the others to interfere with that.

Also look into the DASH Diet. You can Google it. It is the Dietary Approaches to Stopping Hypertension eating plan that can be followed for a lifetime. It includes natural foods that are full of bioavailable vitamins and nutrients (and our body likes those better anyway) that will not only help his blood pressure but improve his overall health.

I would look into Juice Plus! It is a great thing and I have been taking it for a few months now. It isn't sold in stores. If your husband purchases it, you can get it for the kids for free for 6 months I think maybe even up to 2 years. It has made a huge difference in us.

I would go back to the DR. That does not sound right. I do have a suggestion for vitamins that my husband takes, but I would definitely go back. I had high blood pressure and was put on medicine and felt really yucky. Finally got off of it by taking vitamins, protein shakes, doing a detox body cleanse...not sure if one or all contributed to the better health. If he used to get up to work out and now does not want to...something's up. Time to visit the dr again. Best wishes

Look into OPC3. This is one of the most powerful antioxidants out there. Antioxidants fight free radicals which is the first thing your immune system does. If your immune system doesn't have to fight the free radicals it is free to do it's job at fighting sickness and disease. This will be a huge help with his blood pressure and cholesterol. It will help with energy too.
Hope he feels better soon.

I do know it takes time to get the blood pressure under control and medicine in the right combination. He should probably ask the doctor or pharmacist if this is normal or if there is a problem with the vitamins he's taking.

Never combine vitamins and herbs with medication without first consulting a doctor or pharmacist. Those may be the source of his problems. Too much magnesium can put people in a coma and I'm positive St. John's Wort is dangerous when combined with certain meds. He needs to tell the doctor what he's been doing and what has happened to his health as a result of it.

We went through the same thing, except my guy kept going back to the cardiologist and getting the medication changed. After changing his medication repeatedly and things getting worse, my sister-in-law recommended we see a cardiologist from her office. This new doctor explained it in a way that really made sense, but please also discuss this with your husband's doctor. He said that his body was so used to his blood pressure being high that it considered it normal for his body. This medicine was trying to bring it down to a healthy level and the body wasn't understanding what was happening. We were not giving enough time for the body to adapt to its new "normal". Each time he felt bad, we were switching medication and really making things worse and delaying the process even further. I can tell you, I was near my wits-end with the crankiness, tiredness, etc, but after that explanation and giving the medication its due time - he felt a lot better. I hope this helps!!
