Vacation Ideas? - Rochelle,IL

So my husband and I have started toying around with the idea of taking a vacation in December for a couple of weeks. Somewhere to get out of the cold. I would like to go somewhere with a beach and seashells. I know there are a lot of nice beaches in Florida that can be nice, even in December, but I am not sure which ones would be good for a family. It doesn't have to be Florida, but anywhere with a warm beach would be good, and I would rather not need a passport.
Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the suggestions! I hadn't even thought about Puerto Rico!
I spent several winters in southern Florida as a child, but that was a long time ago, and I am sure things have changed since then, but thanks for some city/town/beach ideas!
I will check the weather if we decide to go that route.
Thanks again!

Porto Rico.
South Florida
Hawaii.

With a passport: Jamaica. The water is warm, the beaches are warm and inviting and the people are very hospitable. And there are a lot of inexpensive places to stay.

ETA: Look up cheapcaribbean.com for all kinds of inexpensive places to stay in the Caribbean. Most include airfare.

Good luck to you and yours.

The southwest coast of Florida is beautiful and Sanibel Island was know for the beautiful shells. Look at the area from Sarasota down to Naples and find an area you are interested.

Last year we rented a house on rosemary beach, Florida is beautiful! But it is quiet and there is not much to do. Next year we may plan to stay in a little bigger town but all that area of panhandle, beaches of south Walton are beautiful. Between Destin and Panama Beach (panama beach did not look as nice though)

We went to Florida in December and it was in the thirties X so dont count on nice beach weather there. It might be nice or cold.

my advice is a cruise (you dont need passports but I would recommend them). Its the perfect way to see multiple vacation spots.

We went to Florida in 2009 for Christmas and wore coats the whole time...minus one very cold pool day.

Last January we went on a cruise leaving from Miami - it was downright HOT!! Our ports were all hot also, and we LOVED it. We stopped in Nassau, St. Thomas, San Juan, and Grand Turk.

We are looking at another one and this one will also stop in St. Thomas and Nassau. We swam in Grand Turk last time, but will most likely swim in St. Thomas on this next one. Megan's Bay is one of the best beaches in the world - if you can get there.

San Juan beaches looked more like what you'd see in America versus the Caribbean - from what we saw.

You do not NEED a passport to cruise, but it's recommended - so totally up to you!
