Urine Oder

warning: this is kind of gross, no laughing allowed :) I caught my 7 year old peeing into the heating vent instead of the toliet (we have the kind of vents that are flat on the ground). Now the bathroom has a urine smell that I can't get rid of. What should I do? Can I dump a box of baking soda down there? What happens when we turn the heat on later this year? Any advice would be appreciated.

So What Happened?

The vinegar idea worked really well. Our house smelled like vinegar for a while, but now both the urine and vinegar smell is gone. I also had my SON take out the grate and clean it. That was a great consequence for his action. He hated having to clean it, so now maybe he will learn not to do this again. :)

Wow. I've lived in several houses with these type of vents, but they never had one in the bathroom. Any powder would most likely end in disaster, with it being blown all over your house later this year.

Maybe you already did this, but if not, take off the vent cover. Clean or soak it, and clean in the vent as far as possible with vinegar on a rag. If your son is healthy & well-hydrated (and only did this once?), the smell would probably dissipate before it gets too cold. But if not, those pet sprays work pretty well.

Before you hit the pet store try to use some vineger to see if will work. I would put it in a spray bottle and spray it down the vent to make sure you cover the urine part. Good luck!

Oh, glory---- what will children think of next????? . I'm afraid that a box of baking soda won't solve the whole problem - since it's not liquid --- what you need ( in my old opinion) is to get a container of 'Natures' Miracle' - an enzyme liquid that really does a number on bodily fluids - animal or child. I'd dilute the stuff --- and pour it in -- not gallons - but a couple of quarts -- you still have time for the stuff to work before the weather gets really cold. That would be my suggsetion-

Life is full of surprises -- sorry about this one.

Many blessings,

My friend had this happen to her. Eventually after the whole house smelling of urine, she poured some bleach down the vent. Then her house smelled like bleach for a few days and got back to normal.

May sound strange but what about getting something from a pet store for animal urine odors? IE Natures Miracle.
