hi Mamma's,
My 6 year old had her first UTI.. She was having trouble making it to the bathroom in time.. She had an accident in her booster late at night after our trip to the ER.. So I admit I cleaned it with resolve carpet cleaner and thought it would be ok.. its not.. still smells.. So after 30 mins of wrestling the seat out from the latch system I got it inside and took off the cover and took the whole booster seat apart.. Even though Britax says not to put it in the wash I threw it and it still has a faint smell. Also any advice for cleaning the straps would be great.. I looked online and a cover for the regants booster was 45 dollars and I don't have the extra money..
Thank you for your help,
L.

So What Happened?

Thank you for all your help :)
I went to pet smart today I found nature's Miracle and it's not (the booster cover) 100 percent dry.. But I call tell already what a diference the spray made.. I also sprayed the straps too.. Then at the grocery store I picked up some vinager..

My 4 yrs old neice stayed over this wknd and wet the bed, so I was online looking for the same remedy. What I found was a solution of 1 part dish washing liquid and 1 part vinigar to wash it w/ a scrub brush, after that put cornstarch or baking soda on it to absorb the dampness and vacuumm it off once it drys.

soak it in vinegar water... all of it. DO NOT machine dry the straps. If you do, they will not be strong enough in an accident to to safe. Also, do not iron them. Once you have soaked them, you can go ahead and wash in regular detergent.

I was going to mention Natures Miracle or some sort of other pet urine enzyme solution. Pure Ayre is a good spray to remove odor too. Better for the environment than Fabreeze and works better. Good Luck.

Lenc, your first response from Elaine is on the money. I've tried everything before to get out urine smells (both animal and child) -- Febreze, Nature's Miracle, vinegar, Kids n Pets, you name it. What has worked the best for me is a combination of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and dish soap that someone told me about: mix one 16-oz bottle peroxide with 2 teaspoons baking soda and 2 drops dish soap. Stir to dissolve the baking soda, then pour on your seat cover until it is saturated. Then let it air dry (this is important -- don't put it in the dryer). It will smell while it is drying but once dry, it will be fine. My daughter is potty training and I keep some mixed up in a spray bottle to spray on her clothes when she has accidents. I even use it in my trash cans and diaper pail and it gets the smells out.

There's a BioKleen product that smells like lime that works wonders on our cat's "accidents". I haven't had to use it for baby pee yet, but can only imagine that it'll work well. It was about $7 for a big bottle at Fred Meyer.

I'm not sure if this will work for urine but it worked great for vomit in the car - I put a large 2 quart container in the car filled with vinegar - and closed the car up for 24 hours - took the smell away.

Hi! I have pets--bad things have happened (sigh) and we've been afraid to even have people over to our house. I've been a "Nature's Miracle" fan for awhile, but even that wasn't cutting the mustard any more. Someone told me recently about "Kids and Pets Instant All-Purpose Stain and Odor Remover". You can only get it (she said, and I think she's right!) at Fred Meyer--in the cleaning supplies area. It's less expensive than Nature's Miracle, and by golly, I think it might have done the trick. You think kid pee is bad? You probably know about cat pee--if something can get THAT smell out of clothes/carpet, it's something. Good luck! C.

vinger. Use 1 part vinger to 2 parts water in a spray bottle and spray it down. It will smell faintly of vinger until the vinger evaporates. Then there will be no smell. This works well with the smell of dog too. Vinger is an olden reciepe for removing smells in the air.

You might try that stuff they sell in pet stores for getting urine smell out of carpet. My mom swears it works. Thankfully, I've never had to try it. I think it's something you spray on.

I have had this problem Lenc and there is a pretty easy fix. Petsmart or equivalent will have Nature's Miracle or something similar. I think I used Petzyme or something like that and it totally eradicated any lingering urine smells. It has to do with neutralizing the acid in the urine. Anyway, I kept a gallon jug of it in my laundry room and put it in the wash with any soiled nightclothes but it works on pretty much everything. You can get large amounts or just a small squirt bottle. Hope that helps!

There is a product called Kids 'N Pets that works well. It used to be available at Walmart (may be still) and from what I've heard is also available online. It is an enzymatic cleaner that you saturate the affected area with and then let air dry. It got baby pee smell out of my mattress and cat urine smell out of my carpet.

Good luck!

Baking soda is great for getting rid of unwanted odors. If you have a smell stuck in carpets just cover that area with dry baking soda and leave on overnight and vacuum up. So you might try soaking the cover in a baking soda bath overnight and see how that turns out.

We have used Febreeze and it seems to work pretty well. Of course sometimes it requires two spray and dry applications. But for the most part it works well. As for the straps a baby wipe or just soaking them in warm water is about the only thing you should do. Soaps tend to breakdown the strength of the strap material, so they don't recommend every washing them.

throw the car seat cover back in the wash with about a half cup of white vinegar (REALLY cheap) and your regular detergent. I have only ever had this not work to get smells out of stuff ONCE. And it always works for me on urine smells (I have a bedwetter (= ). Good luck, all will be well.

I read a few of the responses and I agree with the Kids & Pets as well as Nature's Miracle. I use and like both of them. Kids & Pets is a bit less expensive, but it does leave a residue that attracts dirt. In a car seat, it wouldn't be a problem, but on carpet its another story. Nature's Miracle works great, but you do have to completely saturate the area and let it dry on its own.
