Unusual Potty Training Question

Hi, I have an unusual potty-training question. My 3-year-old daughter has mastered using the big potty, and insists on using the same toilet paper we use. The problem is, she uses quite a bit more than she needs, which is making us go through it much faster than usual. While I'm grateful she's potty-trained, we are still trying to save money (like everyone else), and having to buy toilet paper more frequently is not something we budget for. I've tried showing her how to count three squares, and explaining that's all she needs after she pees, but she's not having it. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to teach her not to overuse the t.p.?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for the great suggestions. I printed the t.p. ruler from the Charmin website, and my daughter loves to "measure" the toilet paper up against the ruler. I do remind her that if she NEEDS more, that it's ok too.

Budget more for TP - she feels cleaner when she uses more. I have three girls, wait till they start their monthly visitor you'll need to increase the budget again!

I buy TP when its on sale whether I need it or not that way I never pay full price - sometimes I have what seems like too much in the garage, but a dry spell of sales always comes and dwindles the supply.

Besides, I buy cage free eggs, but would feel weird only using 3 sheets - not enough between my hand and what I am cleaning - ewww. Lol

hi C....
you could simply say that in order to use the big people toilet paper she needs to first learn how to use it... or try one or both of these; clog up your toilet on purpose take advance precautions, remove anything from floor and do it to an empty toilet (you know, just water) then have her help you clean it up OR show her all those horrible sad internet pictures of paper and plastic littering our oceans, rivers, and streams endangering all our precious wildlife in an effort to explain carelessness and wastefulness. if she's anything like my daughter, also three, she must have a soft spot for animals and an utter disdain for being told to clean up after herself. if you'd rather not expose her to all the worlds ills and yourself to a task of flood clean up try finding one of those oval rocking toilet paper holder bars all the fancy hotel lobbys seem to insist on installing (a restaurant supply on-line or local storefront that deals to both public as well as wholesale should have one) rememmber you'll have to use it too and they can be a bit of a pain. if all fails just tell her no it won't be the first i'm sure, and i know it will not be the last time she'll hear it. whatever you try and whatever you can get to work well for all of you, i wish you all the best and lots and lots of patience, goodluck. :)

When we were potty training, we got a kit in the mail from Charmin. One of the things in it was a "ruler" (cute and colorful) that you hang from the toilet paper holder. You might try it. I see you can download and print it now from Charmin's website: http://www.charmin.com/en_us/pages/pt_download.shtml

My daughter does this too - my husband also complains that, in the downstairs bathroom that us girls general use the most for potty-ing purposes, we go through at least a roll every day and a half. Because Im gonna pee less if he complains.....LOL.
I caught my three year old, who has been completely potty trained for quite a while now, putting an entire roll of TP down the toilet (armfulls at a time). She has never cared about the TP, even when she was a baby! I think is just the novelty of it - needless to say, Im over the toilet clogged with TP, thanks.
I can't wait to see what others suggest - just wanted to put my two cents in and let you know that your 3 year old is not the only one!

take 3 squares and make separate piles. Then every time she goes tell her to use the pre made pile. She will get used to using only 3 squares and then you can try giving her the whole roll again and asking her to count.

First, lay the expectation that she will start using less.
Ask her to try one square less each time to get to yr 3 sq.
Make it fun. She is probably afraid to get pee on her hand-we have kids today deathly afraid of germs, we are too germ phobic these days. Pee is STERILE!
Most kids do this. Buy cheap TP. Most 3 yrs olds still need help and we have to /help/ clean poppy bottoms til they are 5 sometimes!
I would reward any attempt to use less. Also you surely see how many 3 yr olds are having potty training issues on this site, so do be pleased she has mastered potty training.

C.,

Does your dughter ever watch you pee and wipe? Does she see how much tp you are using? Also, when both of my girls were getting potty trained my husband and I just repeatedly told them not to take too much. It is definetly annoying but eventually they learn. And, not that you asked, but three squares does not really seem like enough (even for pee).

good luck,

M

How about a little rhyme about folding the squares...

One, two, three
for a pee.
One, two, three, four
if you've made more.

Or whatever you're trying to teach...I'm just making this up.

Maybe you could tear off what she needs in advance and lay it over the roll for her. Could it be that she takes so much because she doesn't know how to roll it back up? Hope that helps.

Stay with her and hand her the paper. Three squares? That seems a bit too stingy to me. I certainly couldn't get clean on that much. Give her five or six, have her wipe, then give her a smaller piece to check herself to be sure she's clean. Teach her that you use more than one wiping, and if the second wipe doesn't show she's clean she needs the third, etc. I know TP isn't cheap, but its a necessity of life and it won't help to give her a 'complex' about it.

pre-fold for her. Don't let her have the roll.

hi there
umm for now, why not HIDE the roll you and your husband use, like say in a bathroom cabinet and simply put out THREE squares for her right near the toilet.. then she will see that that is ALL there is.. ?? could work?

Toilet paper is too expensive to waste! If she doesn't listen to you and do it the way it needs to be done, then take the TP off the roll and put it somewhere you can get to it but she can't and ration it out to her before she goes to the bathroom. Just until she gets used to surviving with less.

I would only give her three squares and not leave the toilet paper within her reach.

My 3 year old is not ALLOWED to touch the toilet paper!!! Every time he has touched it we have lost an entire roll or more. So his dad told he to never touch it again. He is allowed to go do his business but has to yell for us to come help him wipe his bottom.

If you decide to let her use the toilet paper on her own, shouldn't you be able to budget for more toilet paper since your no longer buying diapers?
