My best friend has twin boys and she had them sleep in the same crib until they simply couldn't both fit comfortably anymore. She was told by her doctor that it brought comfort to them since they had always been together and that seemed to be true by their reaction to being put in different beds now. IT was a tough adjustment, but it has worked out well.

My sister's twin boys co-slept in the same crib until they were too big to sleep side by side. I think it was around 6 months.

Then they set up two cribs next to each other so that they could reach in an touch each other through the bars. They stayed like that until they went to big boy beds and into rooms of their own.

My understanding is that they sleep better together because they have already been together for 9 months and would be disturbed by being separated.

My friends found it udeful to have two cribs. Soemtimes they shared, especially at first. But eventually so they both slept soundly without disturbing each other, they put them in two. But the two were also in seperate rooms. Also felt it was important to establish identity, etc. So I guess, one is nice and convenient, but may not last long.

Hi!
I am also expecting twins (not sure of the sex yet) in early 2010. I have researched this topic and find conflicting answers (of course). I have found that for the first 3 months, it is ok to put them in the same crib. Some twins will soothe each other and comfort each other while others will continually wake each other up. I am going to give it a try to see what happens but will also be prepared to separate them! I know there are some l-shaped cribs out there than can be left "open" or can be divided with a plexiglass insert - so the twins can still see each other but not touch/wake each other up.

Good luck to you and your babies!

I have twin girls and this is how I did it after they were born.

Instead of a bassinet in the beginning I used a playpen with the suspended bed downstairs and used one crib for both of them upstairs.

BUT, once they were able to roll over, it was time to seperate them. They will begin waking each other up with flailing arms and rolling over and reaching out to eachother. It was about at 3-4 months that they were moved apart.

I have 15 month old boy/girl twins. Instead of using two bassinets when they were first born, I put them together in one full-size crib (at the foot of my bed). They slept together in the same crib for 6 months (we had moved them to the nursery at this point). They slept with their head & feet going the wrong way in the crib (side to side instead of length wise). So when they got too long to fit in that direction, we separated them into the two cribs (which were side by side in the room). Unfortunately, at 8 months old, they started teething (my boy especially) and waking up at night. My husband pressured me to separate them into two rooms to avoid them waking each other. They are 15 months old now, and still in separate rooms. I feel very torn about this b/c I hear so many sweet stories about twins sharing a room. But my boy was a TERRIBLE night sleeper from months 8 to 13. Now he is back to sleeping through the night (thank goodness!), but I am not sure how to re-introduce them to the same room at this point....so most likely just going to keep them separate.

Best of luck!! Twins are such a special experience :)

Hi J.. I had girl/boy twins (13 1/2 years ago - OMG.) They slept in the same crib for most of their first year (when they weren't in the bed with me.) That's a different topic. Sometimes people make decisions about the number of cribs because of space or finances. I let them sleep in the same crib because it was just physically easier. They loved being together. I'll bet folks tell you that one way or the other is the absolute best thing, but the truth is - what works best for you is probably the best.Good luck, and happy twinning!

CONGRATS!!! I have almost 13 yo twin boys. Remembering back to that time (which is a blur) we had 2 cribs but put them in the same one for the first month or two. They really liked to be together since they had been in such close quarters for the last 9 months. When I noticed that they seemed to be disturbing each others sleep was when I moved them to their seperate cribs. The best advise I can give you is to follow your gut. There are tons of great books about parenting and what not but ultimately you need to do what works best for you and your family. You will get TONS of unsolicited advice from people also. Take what feels right to you and let the rest go. Best of luck! Oh also take anyone up on their offer to help when the babies come. The more hands the better until you get them on the same schedule.

hi, I put my boy/girl twins in the same crib until they were about 3 months. Up until that point they were fine together. I moved them apart when they started moving around a lot and ending up on top of each other. Congratulations on your twins!

I have just-turned-three year old twin girls and from birth
they have slept in the same cradle then crib. When they were about 16mos we got another crib and separated them. It was sad for them and us. After about 6mos of that we bought bunkbeds and they sleep together on the bottom bunk. They are much happier sleeping together and go down for naps with no problem. Sometimes they play or talk in their room instead of sleeping but a stern word usually does the trick.
I don't know when they will want their own bed but for now they're happy so why push it? They are very close...

I had triplet boys and I intended to have them share a crib for a while. As it turned out, two came home on oxygen and one of those was also on a feeding tube. They were getting tangled and pulling tubes... We had to separate them. Also, just FYI, our triplets shared a room for a while as toddlers, what a nightmare! They are now six and we found it immensely helpful to put them in separate rooms. :) Good luck!
