Tuabal Ligation After Vaginal Delivery

I am about 5 months pregnant with my 6th child and I am planning on getting my tubes tied after delivery. I have recovered fairly quickly after delivering each child, but am a little unsure of how it will be different with the surgery after. Has anyone had a tubal following a vaginal delivery? If so, how was your recovery different? I am also a little anxious about the anesthesia because I have never had an epidural. Does anyone have any advice?

I had one at the time of my c-section for baby twins #'s 4&5, I had a little discomfort on the sides of my lower abdominal area, but the weird thing is that my periods are worse. I had heard that from other women, but it doesn't make sense so I disregarded it really. (Logically speaking, I worked in GYN for 15 years, doctors never said anything). But for me it is true. I just wanted to toss that in. I only had the tubal because I knew my husband would SAY he'd have a vasectomy, but never actually DO it. Personally, I think HE should be the one to go through that, but that's my opinion!!! We do everything else!

That being said, I know everyone will support your decision because you have 6 children, but make sure you are really sure. I did go through a period of regret and mourning. I have accepted it now, but I wanted to add that in, please make sure you are ready for peace with your decision. I never cared how other's thought about our large family, most people are against it, but it is YOUR business, and only you know what a blessing a large family truly is (though chaotic at best!!).

Take care,
D.

The incision for tubal ligation (tying of the tubes ) is usually very small, about 1 cm or so. (I used to practice as OBGYN in India and I have completed and seen other doctors as well complete the procedure in about half an hour tops). It is a simple procedure. You should talk to your doctor and ask whether he will do it laparoscopically or regular surgical procedure. ( I don't know about the method used in US)

Any pain after surgery is usually from the incision site where they cut your skin. the pain usually subsided in a couple of days with Ibuprofen (advil).

Hope this helps.

Best of luck.

The nice thing about having a tubal after delivery is the tubes are near the belly button, so they only have to make one little incision in the belly button to do it. My recovery was similar to my first vaginal delivery.
The only advice I have is stay in the hospital the full 48 hours. Don't let them convince you to go home earlier like I did. I made the mistake of going home too soon even though I was still passing clots that were way too big and had a nasty headache from the spinal anesthesia. Luckily, I had a nurse come check on me and told me I needed to stay in bed for the next 48 hours, but that is MUCH harder to do at home than in the hospital.

Hello S.,
I had tubal litegation 8 months after my son was born. I stalled because I wasn't sure if I wanted to. My sis had hers down after her c-section, which she didn't feel it. As for vaginal delivery, I was told there would be a cut under my naval. When I woke up, I had a sore naval plus a bandaid on it. I realized the procedure was done inside of my naval. I went home after I woke up. The kids's father left me to tend to the kids all groggy and couldn't do a thing.
I hope not all doctors do that, but the procedure is less than an hour. The pain is more towards the cut than internally from what I remember. My doctor had told me a lady had her tubes tied twice, she got pregnant both times. Her husband got fixed, she still got pregnant. Be sure to wait 2-3 weeks after the procedure to mess around. Its a safe procedure and the pain is only for a few days if you take medicine. I had to beg for advil, because Tylenol didn't work. That is what they prescribe most of the time. I quit after my 3rd for other reasons, but I wish you the best of luck.
