Tubal Ligation After C-section - Lancaster,PA

I am pregnant with my 5th due Aug. 29. I am having my tubes tied. I had a c-section with my 1rst child, and 3 successful vbacs. I am having another Vbac with this baby. My dr. just advised me to wait 6 weeks after delivering my baby to get my tubes tied. He said because of scar tissue they might not be able to get to my tubes. If they cant get to them they would make another incision on the upper part of my stomach. And they still might not be able to get to them. I dont want to wait 6 weeks because my insurance coverage runs out 6 weeks after delivery. I was wondering if i should have them try & do the tubal after delivery or have another c-section just so i can get my tubes tied, or wait the 6 weeks. Has anyone had this done after c-section? I hate that he told me this at the last minute, im due in 9 days... What should i do??

What can I do next?

I just had my 3rd son 12 weeks ago. All my deliveries were C-sections. After this last one I got my tubes tied at the same time. So far, no problems.

Hi L.,

Have your tubal ligation after your C-Section. There is no reason to wait 6 weeks. There should not be any scare tissues in your abdomin.

The concern would be that they tie up your ureter that goes from the kidney to the bladder. That is the biggest concern with tubal ligation.

Tell him you want your tubes tied after your c-section and please take care to avoid tying up your ureter or ureters.

He will get more money doing 2 surgeries vs doing 1 with 2 procedures.
Hope this helps. D.

My friend had a C-section and had her tubes tide. She didn't have any problems. She was glad she did it that way. This was 15 years ago.I'm sure medical technology improved since then. :) Congratulations and Good Luck on your new arrival!

I am not asking this in any judgement, but have you talked to your husband about him getting a vasectomy? I have four children and my husband is waiting for me to say the word. I think us mommies go through enough. It is such an easy proceedure for a man, or so i hear ;)

Given the large and potentially serious consequences of major abdominal surgery, not only to you, but to your baby as well, I would HIGHLY suggest opting for the VBAC & getting the procedure later on. I think that many times the doctors say that sort of stuff to freak you out, kwim?

I don't suppose that your partner would be willing to have a vasectomy?--SUBSTANTIALLY less risk & a much less complicated procedure.

Either way, I think another VBAC is the way to go, hands down!!! It's just the safest thing for you and definitely for your baby girl!

While I don't have any experience with this situation, I would think if it were me, I would just opt for the C-section and just have my tubes tied then. Why trouble yourself to go in for another surgery after you just gave birth vaginally? Think about the recovery time, time away from baby and your other children, not to mention the pendin insurance issues you might run into.

Just my humble opinion. Good luck with whatever you decide, and Congrats on baby #5!

I had my tubes done after my 3rd c-section. And they had to cut out a large amount of scat tissue to get to the tubes and they still had a little hard time getting to them.

Hate to say it, but i regreat having the tubes done and i regreat haveing the 3rd c-section. But the doctor didnt listen to me and refused my wishes, till a point that it was in tears.

But any way the cut the scar tissue out and used a style of plastic wrap in the area to help control the scar tissue

I have 3 kids and had a C-Sections with each, after my last child the dr did the tubal during the C-Section. So I am not sure why your dr wouldn't do it then.

I had a c-section, and then 2 successful vbacs...I had my tubal done when I was about 8 days pregnant! I didn't know I was pregnant at the time! Anyway, don't have another c-section just because...you know the recovery time, and the pain involved. I had no problems while getting my tubal. I would advise talking with your doctor, and letting him know your insurance situation, and see if he would do it sooner...good luck!

another reason I would not have it done immediately is because everything is swollen after delivery. Go ahead and ask if he could have you come back in at maybe 4wks post partum, explain to him about your insurance. Many times if you have it done directly after delivery it can fail. They typically cut, tie then cauterize, do to the swelling from pregnancy once it goes down it can untie and reconnect. Atleast this is what I have heard. So I would recommend a normal delivery and wait or else if your dh has insurance send him in before your delivery!

In my opinion I would just go ahead with the C-section and have your tubes tied at the same time. I had the same thing done and there is no extra recovery time. The baby is smaller and weighs less at birth than at 6 weeks and also sleeps more and wiggles less. But with 4 more at home I'm sure you don't get much downtime. In the end it is your decision but there is my opinion :) Good luck!!

I had a c-section with a tubal right after and it went great. Do you mean you won't have any insurance at all after 6 weeks? If that's not the case, either way you pay for the tubal ligation. However, my biggest concern would not be having insurance.

Also, I wouldn't have a c-section just to have a tubal ligation. I have had three and the recovery time is much longer and with four other kids running around, you won't be able to properly rest.

Now, if you're vbac doesn't work and you have to have a c-section, then there is no issue. Talk to your doctor about the option of "just in case you have a c section...." I don't really understand why it would be difficult to do a tubal ligation after a vaginal birth. I have more scar tissue than a person can know what to do with and I had no problems, maybe the difference is being open already and the tubes are more easily accessible.

In any case, good luck. (I'm all for the vasectomy as well!)

You know, if your insurance is going to run out and you can get your doctor to do the c-section, I'd probably go that route if you're certain you want the baby factory closed for good!!! Why take any chances... Just my humble opinion. While I am all for the man having the vasectomy, he probably wouldn't be able to get it scheduled before your insurance ran out either. My husband had it done, and any good urologist will insist on a consultation before scheduling the surgery, and that schedule is usually pretty booked up -lol.

I've never had a C-section, but have heard that the recovery from them is much longer and more painful than a vaginal delivery (blessed to have 3). It is only my opinion, but if you've had 3 successful VBAC's why not go for your 4th?
With the tubal ligation, are they doing the new procedure where they enter through a small incision in the belly button? My friend had this procedure (outpatient) and said the only pain she felt was around the belly button for a week afterwards. Your scar tissue might be an issue, but just thought I'd share this procedure.
Maybe you could wait 4 weeks after your VBAC to go back and have this procedure? That gives you 2 weeks of cushion before your insurance is up. Then you could have the "best of both worlds" and not have major surgery either way - hopefully!
In any case, I wish you the best!
