this morning when i woke up, i had a tender area on my the gum at the last tooth on the top. the gum is a little purple around the tooth on one side. it doesnt hurt on the tooth itself to chew on that side, but the gum is a little tender. has anyone had this? i did have nuts yesterday - could i have bruised the gum/tooth somehow or does this sound like something else?

What can I do next?

You could have some of the food or the shell stuck under the gum. Popcorn kernels are really bad at doing this. I would suggest brushing it really well, swishing with water or mouthwash, flossing, and if you have a waterpik...that would be the best thing to use. It will flush the debris out. If it doesn't get better, then I would contact your dentist. You may need your teeth cleaned....gingivitis and/or periodontist could be occuring as well if it has been a while since having your teeth cleaned. Hope the area feels better soon.

Sounds like you might have a piece of nut stuck in there. I would suggest that you do one of two things, either take our tooth brush and brush it good, so remove any possible food that might be stuck in there or use a toothpick to try to get whatever might be in there out.
If there isn't anything in there, you may have an impacted tooth. In which case, you need a dentist.
My guess is it's a nut. I get this sometimes when I eat popcorn, from a piece of kernel.
Good Luck.

I did not have my wisdom teeth out as a young person, because I thought "Hey, if it ain't broke, don't fix it." But in my 40's, I got a pain in the back gum area. Tooth just under the skin was not doing too well. Had it pulled - - easily and painlessly, by Dr. Rebecca Lauck in Keller. I was amazed at the job she did. Didn't even have to use the pain pills she prescribed for afterwards. Just laid on the couch and rested the whole day and took her advice to not suck on a straw (it might suck the good blood clot out of the wound). So, if you still have wisdom teeth, perhaps one is moving downwards and pushing on top of back tooth. If that's not it, then yes - - could be a bruise from a nut. Give it another day, and if still tender, visit dentist. Avoid Monarch Dental (see past discussions).

I worked in dentistry for years, and it does sound like you just have something stuck in there. Not a major problem. :) There is a small space where the gum is not attached to the tooth that food can get stuck in.

Sounds like a gum infection.Rinse with hydrogen peroxide and water.Brush with baking soda. If that doesn't help,it is possible you got a small piece of something between the tooth and gum line. Usually flossing will relieve that. Otherwise a trip to the dreaded dentist.
